I`m annoyed that, now my son is 18 we are no longer classed as a "family" [:(]

I`ve got to sort out either individual, group or couple insurance...thats wrong [V]

You should consider whether you need travel insurance these days. Your emergency healthcare is covered if you have your UK EHIC card. You need to ask yourself what else you need to cover, cancellation, repatriation, etc. and work from there

If applying for a new Health Card please be aware of sites that CHARGE up to 18.99 for this free card, though they are obviously not illegal dont get caught out, use the Government site only its free.

I would RECOMMEND EVERYONE who travels on holiday anywhere takes out FULL travel insurance. OR at the minimum REPATRIATION.

Why...

As the UK EHIC card Does not cover Repatriation...

My parents visited us in April and my mum slipped on the pavement and broke her leg due to her age the hospital here refused to operate due to the length of expected recovery time.

It was a bit of a bull fight to arrange repatriation and the hospital wanted her out of the hospital and the insurance company dragged there heals (I say that... as it took 7 days from entering hospital to being returned home by air ambulance) It seemed likes weeks of phoning the insurance underwriters and my MAJOR complaint was there lack of communication, when they promised to call and let us know what was happening and they didn't....

Anyway I diverse...

What I am trying to say is that without insurance my mother would not have been repatriated and god knows what would have happened... I can say due to insurance she was repatriated and is well on the mend in her home hospital (4 weeks after the accident and 3 weeks after repatriation!)

Can you imagine if this was a more serious incident!! Don't take the short cut it is not worth it! Without insurance Dad would have had to sell there home to pay for the service it cost 1000,00's, we are led to believe closer to 50k but do not have the exact figure but at times like that due to the insurance, money WAS NOT the problem!!

who in the right mind would not take out insurance for you full duration whilst away is asking for trouble. as above anything could happen whilst your away, you need to be covered.

Dee I understand your annoyance BUT in reality your child is an adult and can now vote... go to war, drink and get married without parents consent!

Family insurance is designed around dependants ie children under the age of 18. Most offer families travel insurance with "kids go free". There is a time in a young adults life that they have to pay there own way....

Yeas a lot of young adults are still living with there parents and if your son was 30 and still doing this would you still want him to be able to go on your "family" travel insurance?

It is all about risk... At 18 he can get drunk legally (a risk!) a do a lot more activities than a 10 year old!!!! They have to draw a line somewhere and have done at the age of 18...

I see your point mit [:)]..but it never even crossed my mind that we wouldn`t be able to get family insurance,I was more annoyed that the price had doubled more than the inconvenience of having to sort out 2 insurances [V]
Oh and I would never travel without insurance because like mit says, you never know whats going to happen [B)]

Do not get ripped off by some travel insurance policies - especially travel or holiday linked ones.
Try a site like Moneysupermarket, Confused etc for a range of competitive prices. e.g.

I really am confused.com insurance company's owning comparison sites another con trick.

Who wants to be repatriated - you've much more chance of getting some awful bug in an NHS hospital than you have here. Stay and suffer in pleasant surrounding, nice people, excellent service, good weather, clean rooms, etc. etc. You can fly backwards and forwards inexpensively and probably save money if you take into account UK petrol prices, NHS car park charges, etc. Ik now where I'd rather be poorly
