Telefonica phone and internet

Telefonica IS Movistar!!! On the other hand the confusingly-named TelefonicaInEnglish IS NOT Telefonica, NEITHER IS IT Movistar. TelefonicaInEnglish is simply an agency that is licensed to use the lines which Telefonica/Movistar install.

Whoever you go to to try to cut costs and get everything in English (TelefonicaInEnglish, BT, Orange, the Europe one...) can't do anything until Movistar provide the line. Guess what? People talk of waiting weeks for their line because Movistar lose the paperwork, call round when they know damn well you're out, come with the wrong bits, etc, etc. It's not nice, but it happens.

I signed with Movistar themselves for 10mb broadband with wi-fi, plus phone at about 10 am one morning. Before the end of the day I was surfing away and recording a good 8mb! True, only one of the women in the Correlejo office near Correos spoke English but we managed. Once when I went in with a specific query, she told me I'd have to ring the service number. After listening to the long recorded message and understanding precisely zero, I said "English" clearly into the phone. Magic! The recorded voice switched to English and then I was speaking to someone who really spoke English quite well. It was a long drawnout process because we had to have a three-way conversation, with her talking to a technician in Spanish then instructing me in English. But she was 100% patient and genuinely wanted to be helpful.

I'm sure I'll have some runins with them. But at least it will be with the people who caused the problem and so can fix it, not someone who can so easily say "it's not our fault, it's a problem with the line" without even investigating.

Thats great to hear thanks both of you.

Going to go into the Movistar shop at the Atlantico Centre in Caleta on Monday so hopefully be up and running by the end of next week.

Not blaming Europa for the 6 week wait but it's been too long now.

I switched to orange last year....same speed as telefonica/movistar but at the time was cheaper. They just phoned me and said because my year contract was up then if I committed to renew for another year then they would give me 20% discount on all my internet charges. So now definately a better deal than telefonica/movistar.

Does pay to play one against the other as there is a definate price war on...even if you can only get the same price then you may get a few incentives or better speed. Helps if you speak spanish so can deal direct rather than through a shop/agent as the offers do seem to be better.

Also for info...certain parts of caleta can get 20 meg+ vdsl and having spoken to the telefonica tech it is possible that fuerte may have fibre and 30 meg connections in the next 2 years........maybe

Just placed my order with Movistar today so hopefully won't be long now.

Nice one. You'll be up and running in no time.

ben90125

Was told 7-15 days as apparantly Telefonica wasn't working last week or something.

ben90125

Still waiting for Telefonica to come...It´s only been 10+ weeks now, sigh.

So I take it you are still waiting for your phoneline Ben?
How much is the installation for that and which complex are you on?
Regards, Neil
Looking forward to the day I tick the "One way only" box when booking flights to Fuerte. [:)]

ben90125

I was waiting for the phoneline to be installed yes but they finally came this morning, except they didnt give us a router or anything so have to wait for them to come again  :(

the installation is free with Movistar, and I´m at the Bouganville complex.

Deso

Did they use the original complex phone cable or run a complete new cable from outsids? The reason I ask is that we have a place on a complex but I dont think the existing cables are any use.

I assume they used the original complex phone cable, all they did was come and activate it, was done in 10 minutes.

No problem, I´m still waiting for the router to come and unsure of how it all sets up, the phone socket is different from the ones in UK so wondered if anyone knew how?

Deso

They use a smaller socket over much of Europe, RJ11 I think.
You should get a filter with your router which plugs into the telephone socket and has 2 outlets, one for the modem/router and one for the telephone itself.  :D

Ah yeah, i thought that. Now just gotta wait for them to deliver it, but god knows when that will be, seems to take forever for them to do anything lol.

ben90125

I seem to have the best luck in the world, still no router delivered and Friday my Power Supply decided to die.

You will get a handbook (in Spanish), possibly a CD Rom to install a program on your PC so you can access the router, and a username/password either at the same time or separately.

ben90125

A week later and they still have not delivered the router.

ben90125

Well they delivered the router today finally...

But now there's more problems, it loses connection all the time and is very slow, i assume it's to do with the line between Telefonica and my apartment.

Any idea what i could/should do to sort this?

Phone Telefonica and get them to sort it out.  They have done for me in the past.   They will probably test the line first.  You might have a dodgy router.

ben90125

Yeah thanks i'll do that soon, but for now it's ok, has only disconnected once in the past 2 hours so i'll leave it a few days to see how it goes.

Deso

If they do it like they do in the UK, your modem will go through a 'training period' of around 10 days while the system tries to find a balance between maximum speed and stability.
Leave your modem on and do not keep resetting it and see what happens over the next few days.
You can do occasional speed tests at www.speedtest.net
Make a note of your download speed a couple of times a day, particularly early evening and see how it goes.
What sort of speeds are you getting?
If your line to the apartment is the old internal system wiring, that may not be the best quality or could be a bit dodgy by virtue of age.

Last test i did was around 2mb which is pretty bad even for here.

I will leave it on for a bit see how it goes, hopefully it's fine, after having to wait about 15 weeks from first placing an order would be nice for it to be hassle free.

ben90125

Any idea how to find out the password to access the router settings? it said it is the on the back on of the router but i have tried all the different numbers there etc, have used proper caps but still says password is wrong.

This works for our Telefonica router:

Enter http://192.168.1.1/ into your browser

Username and password are both 1234

ben90125

Any idea if i can view the router stats?

Deso

Find the make and model of you router and google it putting something like    viewing stats     after the make and model.  :)

Thanks, will give that a try, sorry for all these questions. One last 1 for now lol, any idea what the connection info is, as i want to try a different router but i need to put in the username/password, MTU etc.

The standard Telefonica username and password for installing either your modem or router is:

Username: adslppp@telefonicanetpa
Password : adslppp
