Yeah i found that out, but i need to find out the other info such as the MTU and a few others. Otherwise my other router wont pick up the connection.

It's hard trying to search, atm im lucky to stay connected for more than 5 minutes and most pages are in spanish.

Deso

Try using google.co.uk   MTU will normally be 1500

What make and models are your 2 modem/routers?

If you are getting so many drop outs then there is a problem with the line.

Is it a USB or Ethernet connection to your PC. If it is USB then get it connected via Ethernet cable instead.  :)

Looking forward to the day I tick the "One way only" box when booking flights to Fuerte. [:)]

I use an Ethernet cable but it's not my PC dropping connection, it's the actual router to the internet. I'm pretty sure it's a line fault, as it was really playing up for about 4 hours then i moved the telephone cable a bit as there was static on the line and it's been fine for a while.

I'll leave it for a few days just to make sure and see how it goes, don't want to call out Movistar/Telefonica and for it to be fine and be slapped with a bill.

ben90125

Definately a problem with the line, worked fine last night and then the phone cable got moved, and have just spent 2 hours trying to get in the right position for it to work.

ben90125

Sorry for all these questions but, if i get Telefonica to send an engineer out and the they don't find a problem what is the cost?

Also the issue is the actual socket i think, the splitter is pretty lose and can be wriggled with ease, would they be able to fix this or would they say it's nothing to do with them and charge me anyway.

Deso

Not done anything with Spanish sockets as yet so this bit is guesswork.
Can you unscrew the socket from the wall? CAREFULLY!!
If you can and gently ease it away so you can see the wires, 2 or 3 I would think, are they screwed in or pushed into a slot?

ben90125

I'm pretty sure I can take the socket off, there are no screws and the engineers took it off when they first activated the line, not sure what I would do after that though.

Deso

Have a look if you can and if possible I would definately get a new socket.

Yeah I may have to do that, but would fixing that explain the low sync speeds I'm getting? I can understand the loss of connection with it being lose but I always thought such low sync speeds was to do with a faulty line?

You need to look in your stats and see what the Line Attenuation and Noise Margins are for both Download and Upload.

ADSL Link

Downstream

Upstream

Connection Speed

6947 kbps

796 kbps

Line Attenuation

42.0 dB

26.0 dB

Noise Margin

5.9 dB

11.7 dB

For example, these are mine and were to be found in 'Maintenance' ,  'Show Statistics'  in the modem.

I am a couple of miles from the exchange.

I believe NH is fed from 2 different exchanges but I'm not sure which feeds where.

Brightspark knows I think.   BARRY!!!!! are you there?   :D

There we go

                           Downstream    Upstream
Rate(Kbps)              2539               317

SNR Margin(dB)      6.0                   24.9
Attenuation(dB)      36.8              63.0

The SNR Margin has been changing all day, between 6 and 10.

That's probably the best they have been all day, usually it was between 1-2 and only connecting for 5 minutes at a time.

Not sure which exchange I'm connected too, no idea how to find out.

I'm hoping it is a line fault, i was hoping for more around 5mb and a stable connection.

Do you know what your line speed is rated at, 3, 6 or 10 meg?

If it was 10 meg with your downstrean figures you should be getting 5 or 6 meg.
The upstream figures seem high though.

If the SNR stays above 6 it should not be dropping out.

I would certainly try a new socket and see what you get then.

ben90125

It's 10 meg, and yeah i assumed i would get around 5 meg which I would be fine with.

Not sure about trying a new socket though, I have no idea how to change it or where I would get 1 from.

In the UK, BT or whoever, are responsible for the line up to, and including the master socket, first one in from the incoming line. You could check if that is also the case over there.

Hmm so I would need to get Telefonica to replace it then I guess.

I am not clued up at all about anything Spanish, hence all the questions.

Every day is a school day, as they say.  :D

If your still having problems in another 6 weeks or so, I'll come and have a look.  ;D

ben90125

Haha yeah I guess it is.

Will give them a call in the morning see what they say.

If it's anything like the build up to getting the internet connected then I'll probably still be trying in 6 weeks lol.

ben90125

Decided not to call them yet, just in case, yesterday it was horribly poor and today I've only had to restart the router once, so hopefully it carries on like this.

ben90125

I'm really confused now, from Friday - Monday the internet was perfect, no disconnects or anything, now though it's dropping every few minutes again...

Deso

How was your speed over the weekend?

Best I got was about 2.9, would of liked more but it's enough to play online games with.

It's actually working ok again now, has been up for the past 6 and a half hours. Maybe it was a problem with Telefonica and not my line, shame I have no way of finding out, guess I'll wait and see if it continues then I'll have to give them a call.

sorry to hijack the thread but i was due to have an ADSL line put in today on the Golf but the engineer from Telefonica said that the line from them is fine but the cabling inside the house is shot and that is my responsibility to have that upgraded and sorted before they can activate the line.
I havent got a clue how thats supposed to be done and what needs doing, and the engineer didnt offer any advice either, does anyone have any idea if there is any companies or individual's that can upgrade the telephone  wiring so that Telefonica can activate the line?
Thanks

ben90125

Not too sure about this myself, but I would think an Electrician should be able to do this, but no idea of the cost or anyone who can do this myself sorry.

Maybe someone else will know.

Do you have more than one socket in your house?
I would have thought that Telefonica were responsible for the cable into the house up to the first socket (Master)
If you have more than one socket, did you want to plug your modem into one other than the first one in from outside?

I think I know someone who may be able to help and have just mailed him. Will let you know.  :)

Thanks guys.
Telefonica are saying that the wiring from the house is my responsibility not theirs and they say about 50 meters of it so im guessing that is the distance to the exchange from the house. how the hell they expect the standard householder to be able to cable underground to there junction is beyond me.  :o
advice still gratefully received  :)

ZappaRocks

They look after the main outside box and the one in your home which is their property same as the UK.

You could try BT Spain which have their own engineer who might be able to help but it's hard to see how the cables could be shot in a modern house.

You could try Steve on 691492344
Try to educate a fool and you become one
