The speed cops are outside Witchcraft this morning- camera in the car beige coloured and two trafico on motor bikes to do  to do the dirty work.

But, I would rather they caught the guy who overtook me by crossing the unbroken white line just before I spotted the speed trap on my way into Lajares from Corralejo.

Happy motoring everyone.

Hope they catch and fine plenty of morons who break the law.

I'd rather they caught the crooks, burglars and thieves that seem to be on the increase recently and not a driver who inadvertently strays over the line.

Pretty impossible considering the island has no active investigation force.

I'd personally they caught the driver who cut the bend and put my life at risk rather than the thief who stole my iPad that I can can replace with a trip to Ideal

Be quite handy if they could catch them all really.

Yorkiecouple - nearly got shoved off the road by some moron driving on the wrong side of road coming back from Los molinos a few moths ago, but would rather have that than the knowledge that some scrout stole our iPad plus other things whilst walking round our home whilst we were asleep - virtually fotgot about the tosser driver but still paranoid about our private space being invaded some 12 minutes months ago  🙁

Totally agree after our experience last month, every time I now use my new mobile smart phone I am reminded of our villa break in whilst we were asleep😭😭☹☹

Until you've been robbed in your own home yourself it's hard to imagine the mental trauma it causes. Fortunately we were out when ours happened and it was bad enough. To know they had the gall to do it while you are there must be even harder to stomach.

I'd much rather be cut up or be the victim of another minor traffic offense than have my home broken into and my private space violated.

Ok a traffic incident may end up injuring you but then so too could waking up and taking on a couple of tooled up burglars. Neither should be trivialized.

They came in through our window in the middle of the night in Apartamento Esmeralda in Caleta, gassed us and stepped on the double bed that we were sleeping in to rob us, took an Ipad, my wallet with 80euro in, TV, and multiple other items, their finger prints were on the shiny green tiles that were under the window, thankfully there was a calima the days prior, phoned police, showed them the very obvious fingerprints, subsequently told there was no investigation unit in Fuerteventura, ring for a (useless) crime number.

True story, 2008

Can the Man

We had a breakin in Esmeralda also in 2009, luckily we were not there at the time, they broke down n through the small window beside the front door, because I had extra locks on the inside they were not able to break out and had to leave the same way as they got in, stole my bagpipes and an iPod never got them back. The pipes were in a small carry on case and we reckon they were watching us for several nights as I used bring the case with me every night as I was playing in some of the local pubs at the time. The particular night we got broken into was the one night I decided I wanted a night off from playing.  The small window they broke in through was the size of a 10kg carry on case, there were foot prints and hand/finger prints all over the place, police were not interested. We reckon it was some of the scum that used hang out around the Casino across the road, as we came home about 2 hours earlier than we would normally do.

Sadly there must be thousands of cases such as these over the years.. We used to get paranoid leaving the place of an evening and arrival home was always with some anticipation of another incident. There is no doubt in my mind a lot of the house breaking is done in areas. When an area has been cleaned out they move onto the next one and so on, even to neighboring islands. The police are always one step behind if at all and they seem able to do their dirty deeds trouble free. Not sure why anyone would play down the extent of the problem, as doing that only aids the criminals. Maybe they do because it gives a bad press to what is a very lucrative holiday market.

KWC

Its hellish to hear of all your break ins guys/gals and I do feel sorry and sad to hear these tales.

Like you all no doubt, you love the island too much to turn your back on what a few mongrels are trying to do to the good people who in essence make the island a better place, tourism, employment etc.

Some there of course wont see it that way.

one I saw a couple of days ago it was a friend of the owner of the villa, the villa in question was a holiday let and a guy was woken at 5:30 in the morning and confronted a chap trying to break into the property, nothing was stolen but the guy was saying to remove the post as it would hurt future revenue for his pal and it was out of order for even reporting it.

I saw that too and couldn't believe what I was reading. The poor guy got a right mauling too

If every property that was known to have been previously burgled on the island was boycotted by holidaymakers there would probably be very few rentals available. My advice would always be to hide your valuables in a good place whenever absent. Had a bad experience with a safe once and i would strongly recommend not using them. Others may feel differently. Stick it under your mattress ...they will have to lift you up to get it. The size of some of the tourists I've seen on the island would make that an impossibility for the thief. ;)

This topic has brought back happy memories of my stays in the Caleta Playa, a complex that attracted more than its fair share of burglaries, mostly due to bad design and lack of security lighting. Management couldn`t have cared less until bookings fell, then a security guard was employed. Spent most of his time with his feet up in the reception area, lights off and door locked. As for as I know they never got round to replacing the laughably flimsy locks, putting a bulb in the security light or removing the decorative walls that simply provided a ladder for the burglars to access the balcony. A crying shame really as it was a handy location and stunning sea views, as they say.
Mentor to the boneheads.

Now guardia civil do has access to finger printing - but they need to get them out sooner and not days after the crime.  Seems a couple of people were arrested last week but only 2 out of a gang 😐

RVEEE

I would never use a safe; hotel staff have pass-codes and I've seen them being entered with a tap by someone who had seen it on YouTube.

Conceal valuables elsewhere (the lining of an 'empty' suitcase?). You only need to slow a thief down so that they go elsewhere.

Also sliding patio doors are a poor security, find a length of wood or similar and drop it into the channel to brace the door from being forced.

Sometimes old technology works.
