Anyone else having problems getting a good priced holiday at the moment? We always holiday in May and then again in Sept/early Oct and got a cracking deal for this May staying once again at the Magic Life in Jandia (our 9th visit) but for this Sept, Thomson/First Choice wants over £400pp more than any other time we have visited (currently they want £1100pp), so we began looking at other hotels in the area and they have all gone UP big time, What is going on ???

Even B+B is more than we normally pay for AI, Is it the airlines being greedy? (I know the GPB/Euro will have a little bearing on price, but really...£400pp !!!!)

We have tried booking flights and then a hotel separately, but still way more than we normally pay, In fact we can do 11 nights in Tobago - on the same dates, cheaper than Fuerteventura :-( Would hate to give up our favourite isle but we are being priced out at the moment.

Is it just us??

Not just you.  The Fuerteventura Travel Forum on Trip Advisor has had similar comments recently.

One of the consequences of Egypt, Turkey and Tunisia, which to all intents and purposes, are out of the equation. Canary Island taking up the slack especially from late Sept onwards when the Med resorts start to contract.
I HATE computer thingyss

In other words. More demand so good excuse to hike prices for what will be costing the holiday companies very similar to last year. Typical !!

Unfortunately it is the way of the world, The law of supply and demand

And factor in all these fake claims for sickness @ 3grand a shot! The Spanish said they would re-act. Got to make it back somewhere.
Cuba in Sept - 2wks all inclusive Sept £800.

Thanks everyone.
Glad to see its not just us finding the prices going through the roof. Crazy that we can now go to the caribbean cheaper than the canaries.
We LOVE Fuerteventura but cannot justify the money they want. Totally gutted 😂I now fear for the tourist industry if the travel agents continue to be so greedy....eventually tourist will stop coming and then what for the Fuerteventura businesses who rely on us coming to this beautiful isle???

It doesn't appear to be airline prices as we booked our Norwegian flights for end of September and price is very similar to what we normally pay. Apartment is same price and car hire same as last year.
Try booking a villa/apartment through owners direct then get your own flights works outabout the same.

Haven't booked with a tour operator for nearly 20 years.

We've just come back from two weeks on the island, £350 for 3 x flights including seats and luggage, £250 for apartment for 14 days.
We've also booked 10 days for late January, £180for 3 x flights inc seats (need to add luggage nearer the time) and £177 for the apartment.

Cheapest flights i've found so far is £458 rtn. Cheapest HB hotel (so far) is £1350 for 11 nights in Costa Calma.

We normally go to Magic Life in Jandia which unfortunately is  Tui hotel so can only book via them. Have paid no more than £1550 for 11 nights the last 8 times we have been. This time they want £2300. Tried booking hotel directly and they want 1600 euros so add on flights and its not far off the total Thomsom want so feel even the hotels are jumping on the bandwagon !

Now on the hunt for a decent appartment (although personally hate the idea of cooking while on holiday !)  But needs must and might now be our only option if we are to return to our "2nd home"

I usually use booking.com and check in local currency. This avoids currency issues. I honestly don't see a change in prices. Maybe a small one but nothing noticeable. Obviously the change of the exchange rate means the price in £ is higher. But that's not the hotel.

If you fly to mainland Spain first (Madrid or Barcelona) you can often get a cheaper total flight. It's a hassle but we saved enough last year to pay for a few nights in Madrid.

You don't need to cook in an apartment you just go out. It's nice to have the fridge for water but the most we do is make coffee.

Seems to me every year there are new people. You can tell because they're shocked/amused by the lack of swimsuits  :o

Mr Boo Boo

Back in fuerto next Saturday flights £450 for two with hold baggage reserved seats and meals (booked direct with airline),
1 week half board in 4 star hotel in coreleco £925, we used to always book through Thomas cook realised that we were being ripped off when I found out that they were charging £120 transfers from airport to Caleta..for myself and Mrs cheeks and two sons so agree with other postees book everything direct much much cheaper, and if you are using a Barcelo hotel become a member we get 10% off for being a member + 5% off for being a pensioner (55 years old) + automatic room upgrade and 47â,¬ voucher to spend in the hotel.

If your budget is tight, then there are ways of saving.  As others have suggested, booking flights and accommodation separately is an option, and one which I always do.  I don't think it's true that you can only book Magic Life through TUI - I stayed there in May and booked through Travel Republic, getting a better deal than anywhere else.

Another option is to book via a cashback site.  TopCashBack currently offer 4% cashback on Thomson package holidays, so that would knock nearly a hundred quid off.  If you can find your chosen hotel on Hotels.com, Expedia, etc, then again booking via TopCashBack can offer big savings, up to 12% off a hotel booking.

It's likely that you've just left it a bit late to book Magic Life for this September, and so the quotes you're getting reflect that.

Frankly, I think Magic Life is vastly overrated, and there are much better value hotels around.  Quite close by, there's the SBH Paraiso Playa, which offers 11 nights all inclusive for around £1450 in September, and I know from experience that it has a much nicer restaurant and is far quieter than the frenetic Magic Life.

Hi Peter,
Budget not the problem, the point I was trying to make was the way the travel agents have jumped on some sort of bandwagon and decided to up their prices by an average of 49% ! We have never paid any more than £750pp for the ML, and this time they wanting £1120pp, In May this year we got a fantastic deal of only £602pp :-) I expected a small change to allow for the GBP Vs Euro rate, but not that much ! It more out of principle that I now refuse to book with them.

I have tried Travel Republic but they are not currently showing the ML so can't book via them, Have tried many other avenues but apart from booking directly through ML website (even they are wanting over 1600 euros, so it appears they also have put their prices up) we are now stuck and have to accept that we shall be going elsewhere this time

Have seen plenty of other hotels (when booked seperatley) a lot cheaper, so a change is as good as a rest as they say :-) and we sooooo won't be booking via a tour operator out of principle :-)

First Choice are currently offering 11 nights from Gatwick for £991pp, flying on 26 Sept, with 3.5% cashback through TopCashBack reducing this to £956pp.

Always book yourself and give your operTors a miss ( cut out the middle men) it's always cheaper and I find more rewarding, but it does mean if something goes wrong, you need to sort it yourself

I used to always book independently, until we were stranded in the Dominican Republic in 2010 when the ash cloud fiasco closed down European airspace.  It took us almost 2 weeks to get home, and cost us several thousand pounds.  Now, I only book independently for European trips, and use an agent for the Caribbean, etc.

hairybiker

Just booked the same hotel, same terms for June 2018 and price has increased (adjusted for drop in value of Sterling due to Brexit) by 7% over the price for the same 2 weeks booked in July 2016

Mr Boo Boo

Just looking at flights for our new year break, no bargains at the moment, guess its a matter of waiting for them to come down (hopefully)... 2 more days and we are back on the Island  8)

MalT

On the positive side it is cheaper to live here, but you are right increasing demand and a falling pound will makes things more expensive in the future. Told as a remoaner, have to grin and bear it, so I grimace and bear it 🙁
