What will happen to British passport holders health care in the Canary Islands or Spain when the UK  hopefully exits the EU?

What is the health care situation is now  for Non EU members retired or working or visiting  the Canary Islands?

It may have escpaed your notice that there are a few more visitors from non EU countires visiting the Islands during the past 12 months .

Non European countires  are I believe are Switzerland, Norway, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania, Macedonia, Ukraine, Moldova, Iceland, Belarus, and soon Turkey and possibly Russia if they are ever granted EU status.

Non EU citizens who are legal residents in Spain are able to access the public health system like any other Spanish citizen. Anyone under the age of 18 regardless of nationality is also able to access public health care.
Other non EU citizens on short temporary stays need to prove they have medical insurance unless their country has a bilateral agreement regarding the issue. Spain apparently has this agreement with around 8 non EU countries.

Why should it be any different if Britain became a non EU member?.

I f a person is Personae non Grata they

.A. You would not get legally into the country in the first place

.B. Be deported as soon as they are made so, or if having arrived illegally.

I am afraid I cannot follow your thinking!

erik_tonny

Personae non gratae is used here as an euphemism!

And very clever it is too erik

If the Uk goes they lose one of the biggest contributors to the EU coffers. You can understand why they are desperate for a remain vote. That desperation filters down from the very top i.e. Cameron, Merkel and Hollande right down to the very bottom. i.e. ...on here.

Nobody on Fuerteventura will be any worse off than they are now. The only difference is they might find the unessential road improvements etc scaled down a little when the UK taxpayers funds that paid for them are diverted to where they should always have gone, to the NHS and other British public services.

Bit of a daft question.  The answer is OBVIOUS.  You go on holiday to a non EU Country ,  USA, Caribbean etc, you have to buy Travel Ins. I do it every year.

Same here, if you are from a non EU Country and NOT a legal resident who is registered with the Canarian Health Authority.

erik_tonny

You are absolutly right Woe10.
In fact I would even advise a travel insurance when you go to an EU country.
Your national health care will only  reimburse cost for emergancy health care and that to the national maximum tariff.
Needing health care in a foreign country is never pleasant, but it may soften the pain if your insurance ables you to visit a private clinic.

meggie

Not only that but without insurance you are not covered for other things, particularly if the medical emergency required repatriation. without insurance this would cost you or your family a fortune.

woe10

Exactly, unless you are prepared to fork out a small fortune for a Premium Policy.

â,¬40/year for a 6 month maximum stay.

That doesn't make sense.  â,¬40 / YEAR but you can only stay 6 MONTHS.  Where did you get this from, and what cover do you get for â,¬40 / year  ??

Exactly the question I was going to ask Woe, when we came here first we got a maximum of 6 months, I cannot remember the exact cost but it neared £150.

erik_tonny

Sorry, I wasn't too clear.
Speaking about a travel insurance, valid the whole year but a trip is limited a 6 months successive stay. You can have 3 seperate 4 month trips if you like.
Includes repariation, extra staying costs for spouse and children, extra flights in case of severe illness or death of family members.
including an extra coverage for  cancellation costs (max â,¬6000) we pay â,¬75 a person a year

Just taken out a annual multi trip insurance with Staysure. Cost £98, but that included 20 discount I got from a promotion. This included a 100 day extension, to allow me to stay for longer than 3 months at a time.

Have always taken this out since 2005. Never actually used the to claim anything. Have visited the Centro Salud in Correlajo using EHIC with no problem. Having peace of mind for £100 on long stays is worth it whether we remain or leave EU.

Thats interesting Beachlife, you must be a very healthy young person with little or no medical history issues,
Just got a quote for 2  people over retirement age £1125 for a long stay policy!
I Think also They wont cover you over 75 years of age.

Well I`m 60+, so whether that counts me as young is debatable, but I`m happy to consider it as "young". You are correct, I have been fortunate in that I have no medical issues.

Regarding Staysure not covering for 75+ have a look here.

Of course whether Staysure is the best/cheapest insurer depends upon each individuals` circumstances.

When I go on vacation, I always use this Spanish company on-line. Half the price of UK, no questions, no age limit.
I got paid out no problem once, when I used them whilst on holiday in Cuba.
