Gold dust in The hills.?

I recently heard of gold dust being found in the hills near Caleta.Has anyone else heard this?

Geologically speaking, I think it's very unlikely there could be natural deposits of gold in a land produced by recent volcanic activity.

The rocks here are certainly over 2 million years old and there's lots of basalt around. But I don't think anyone will be getting rich.

Strictly speaking there probably is gold, but it will only be present as a trace element in the rocks, i.e. in such small amounts (ppm = parts per million or ppb=parts per billion) which are only detectable by using highly advanced technology (eg. ICP-MS =  inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy).

You really need a subduction zone, not intraplate ocean islands like the Canaries, Cape Verdes, Hawaii etc., to get some gold mineralisation. There (subduction setting) you get porphyry and/or epithermal gold deposits often associated with copper.

In the right geological setting a few hundreds of thousands of years (or less) are probably enough to produce some gold mineralisation.

Side note: I think gold mining is fascinating. I have watched lots of Todd Hoffman and his crew, but I got bored by the artificiality of the show. Without sponsoring from the Discovery channel and Volvo he wouldn't be mining. The real bit of the show is that they are mining placer gold, ie gold that has been eroded out of the mountains and deposited by rivers and other erosional processes. You need a great placer gold deposit to be able to afford all that super expensive machinery they've got on the show. They simply never find that amount of gold. Discovery and Volvo kept them going - for show!
