Police station, Puerto.

How naive of me to assume that having applied for a new N.I.E., got all the paperwork, paid at the bank and lodged it at the Police station, I could simply walk in and collect my new copy a few days later. Everyone else there had a numbered ticket and I was asked to produce one. I asked where to get it and nobody could tell me. A couple of customers spoke English but still couldn't explain how or where they got their tickets.
The policeman on the front desk let me in when I explained I was there simply to collect an N.I.E. Problem was, every time a customer finished, another one was there with a ticket, desperate to be served. It became clear after about 20 minutes that I was not going to be seen in the general throng!
Luckily I rang Steve Lipner and on his advice, handed the phone over for him speak to the guy on the desk. 2 minutes later, I left, clutching my new document.
Moral of the story? Don't try wading through this sea of red tape on your own, get help from someone who knows the ropes!

I'm sorry, I can't understand how no one could explain where they got there ticket from?
There must be a machine that gives tickets, so surely someone could point or grab you by the arm and take you to the machine.

Just regarding the N.I.E. Number.
I got one in April 2011 when I bought a property in Caleta.
I then made a Spanish will and went to the Notary with my solicitor.
I got a non residency bill in 2013 and I paid this assuming this was just normal.
Do I need another N.I.E. Number , as I assumed with being a non resident I just used the original one as a reference.
The other strange fact was that when I got the recorded fine it was delivered to my apartment in Caleta and not my U.K. Address.
Fortunately I was on holiday at the time and signed for the receipt via the post woman and paid the bill at the Solbank.

A few Qs to clarify your statements before offering any answers:

Please forgive all the queries but they are necessary to ensure you are given the best possible advice. Sometimes people use different terminology which complicates matters! Hopefully we can come up with some possible answers for you.

Interesting point Deso. Believe it or not, it did actually cross my mind where all these tickets had come from! There was no sign of a machine on site and nobody could explain. As they all looked somewhat crumpled, I assume they came from elsewhere. Perhaps someone could throw some light on this?

I took the bill to a Spanish speaking estate agent and she said the bill was a "non residency bill".
I've not had one before and my circumstances haven't changed , so I just assumed it was another way of getting money into the economy.
Regarding the N.I.E. Number- after the initial purchase of the apartment I haven't had the need to supply anyone with the details, I just assumed it was a number given for life as a means of identification if required for purchasing property etc.
The "non residency bill" is the only one I've had , but I was told that it had an additional charge due to non payment.
The receipt is in Caleta , but from memory I think the initial invoice was around 200 euro's with an additional charge of about 50 euros .
I went to Fuerte for a break , so rather than get annoyed I just paid the bill and enjoyed my break.
I don't know whether I should pay or not , and the fact it was for the 2013 period suggests that I will get further back dated invoices.
When I first bought my property I set up direct debits for everything and this is the first time I've had to pay any additional bills separately within the five year period.

Just to clarify, the invoice for "non residency" that I received for 2013 wasn't received by myself until December 2015

"Where do I get a number at Central Police Station": The policeman sitting at the desk as you enter hands them out, if it's busy.
"What's non-residents bill": You probably mean the illegal (by EU Law) non-residents renta tax, payable each year on Modelo 210 form. If you don't pay it you get the bill AND penalty fine (if you own a property).

Does anyone know how ,or if you can set up a direct debit to pay the non-residents rents tax.
I called into the council office beside the police station in Caleta the first year I bought the property and I was told that everything was set up.
I obviously should still have the 2014 bill to pay , and hopefully if I can get things sorted out at least I can avoid paying the penalty charge for the 2015 period.
I find it bizarre that they send the correspondence for the bill to your holiday home and not to your main residence.

The payments to the council will be for your IBI (Council Tax) and Basura (Rubbish Collection), the Non Residents Tax requires you to fill out a form each year (Modelo 210).

There are companies that can do it for you, for a fee, such as Spanish Tax Forms who charge Â£29.95 per property, they will also arrange for the tax to be paid, you just pay them the amount owed.
