Recently, a holiday rep advised newly arrived holidaymakers to ask their hotel to change their booking to all inclusive as Corralejo isn't safe to venture into at night. She implied they should stay in their hotels rather than go to restaurants in the town. Has anyone else heard of this happening? Are the reps on commission from the hotels, I wonder.

Holiday reps will always tell people whatever will benefit the company. It's in the job title - 'Thomsoncookmonartui Representative' - Get more business for the company. Secondly, keep the customer happy - this leads to extra business for the company. The rep will also benefit, in some way, from the hotels, by keeping their customers on site, even if it's just free drink and food for themselves.
Where did this particular story come from, by the way?

Holiday Reps have done this for years, for back-handers.

Holiday Reps are  "$%&=*??$". DON'T LISTEN TO THEM.

I've heard of them telling people to stay around their Hotel Pool and Bar, as there are Sharks in the sea.

They are try there best to kill off Bars in Caleta.

The son of a very good friend of mine has recently quit as Thomas Cook rep. on Lanzarote. When he started, he was paid commission based on what he sold, which was OK.

BUT they changed the rules on him and only paid commision if he received recommendations from the homeward bound holidaymakers in that survey we all throw away on the plane home.

So not only do TC (and poss. others) screw their customers, they screw their staff as well.

But it was ever thus.  I know as I used to work for them in the Financial Services arm (now Travelex)

I was told this by an expat who was asked by their visiting friend if Corralejo is really so bad at night that they should stay safely in the hotel.

The rep was absolutely right!
Of course, now that most british holiday makers have left the island, Corralejo is safe again!

They are not the only questionarres that get thrown away. The ones that you fill out to give back to the Rep get binned if they don't like them. Believe me, I know.
