I want to buy and import a guitar from Germany to Fuerteventura. Is it likely to be stopped for import tax or VAT,and if so how much would I have to pay.

I have imported guitars from Germany and the USA. Yes you will have to pay customs duty, and possibly courier fees.

It varies all the time, depending of course on the value of the guitar.

If you are resident, ALWAYS include your NIE: number in your address, this will save a load of hassle, as it will pass through customs in Madrid first, then on to Las Palmas, and they are a pain in the back side.

Crazy example: I imported a pair of  Kangaroo Skin cowboy boots from the USA. Unkown to me they were on the "Exotic Animal Skin" list, and I had to fill in a release form before Las Palmas would send them on. This could only be done through a Customs Broker in Rosario at the cost of â,¬50. They finally released them after two weeks, then I had to pay the postage from Las Palmas :(

Good luck.

Make sure you pay for it VAT-free for a start. If you're buying from Thomann they're well versed in the rules and will happily do that. Some companies think that they HAVE to charge VAT as we're in Spain but it isn't true. So you're then liable for 7% IGIC plus the customs fee and delivery from them to here (we generally find we pay 12-15â,¬ on top of IGIC but I don't know what the rules are). Good news is that they don't bother to intercept a very high proportion of parcels so you may get away with zero.
