Riu Calypso Jandia

Just wondered if anyone has stayed at the Riu (Sensimar) Calypso resort? I read one review that indicated the spa area is naturist, but not sure if that's accurate or if that person just happened to use it at a time where some Germans decided to go naturist when perhaps they shouldn't have. Cant find anything official to say it is, so if anyone's been and can confirm that would be great!

It's a beautiful looking hotel on the Morro Jable side of the hill. I love Morro Jable, it is much more authentic than Jandia. No UK tourists either. Not sure about its naturalists status

Yeah I saw that its adults only but then on a review site someone mentioned it had good facilities for kids! So wasn't sure about that either! Guess I'll just have to go and find both these things out then...

But is it rhe 'right' sort of Adults Only? A friend works Receeption at a Warners (the clue should be in the name) Adult Only hotel. They reckon at least one a month someone books in, expecting a lot more fun than is actually on offer

We've stayed at Riu hotels before and they are always fantastic and really nice - not anticipating it to be a swingers resort or such like! Stayed in the Riu in Formentera and their spa wasn't naturist, although kids were allowed in there so maybe that's why. It'd be nice if this one is, but if not then it doesn't really matter as there's still the beach and sea!

Just got another question for anyone who is familiar with the hotel or area - which way from it is best to head for naturist beach spots and how far should I expect to have to go to find an area where nudity is accepted and found?

I have seen naturists in the sand slope which is just in the front of Riu hotel. If you walk the beach towards the lighthouse, usually the naturist-friendly zone befins right after you have passed tha Robinsons hotel.

Well having been and now returned I am happy to report that yes, the Calypso is indeed adult only and yes, the spa area is naturist, although sadly the outside bit where the Jacuzzi and sun beds are on a 3rd floor roof top, is textile. But it was nice to be able to wander into the spa and strip off for steam, sauna, hot beds, showers or just to relax on the regular sun beds. With the clientele being 99% German no one batted an eyelid at the nudity so it was all good. They even had a special spa night from 21.00-23.00 (run every Tuesday) where they put out nice scrubs and oils to use, light lots of tealight candles and allow the Jacuzzi area to be used naturist as the area is only open for those who register for the event and it is nude only (although funnily enough the registration form says "just bring a towel and your swimming costume" )

Also I loved the balconies the rooms had - very large and private with high walls, so nude sunbathing was no problem. I was a bit unsure at first as obviously the people either side would still be able to see you, but I had a vantage point across some of the other balconies further away and saw several people nude, then one of my neighbours came out on the balcony nude followed by his wife so I was then more than happy to indulge!

As for the beaches nearby, I did indeed find that walking about 10 minutes toward the light house produced a higher volume of naturists and usually picked out a spot there, but overall I was disappointed that only about 20% of beach users were naturist and none at all outside the hotel. I thought it would be a much higher percentage like in Formentera, where I found it to be about 60-40 naturists. With so many textiles constantly walking up and down the beach at the waters edge it wasn't ideal, I think having a designated naturist beach would work better for this area. That said no one seemed to care or stare so it wasn't too bad and I loved the sunbathing and swimming!

Sam41, thanks for the report on the Calypso. Good to know, and maybe we'll give it a try on a future visit.

As for the beaches, it seems to vary greatly day by day. When we were there in March, the section below the sandy hills in front of the RUI was almost totally nude one day when we arrived there, but then totally textile the next day at around the same time! It does seem to depend on who gets there first, and as has often been mentioned in other threads, usually when someone goes nude others will follow.

But from the start of the sunbeds towards the lighthouse was usually always totally textiles, until you reach the area you found, where there are 2 sets of sunbeds and these were always about 90% naturist.

I know what you mean about a dedicated naturist beach but I personally hope Fuerteventura doesn't go down that road - like it just the way it is!
