To conclude then - do we want the police to impose the speed limits as they exist OR should the police allow all and sundry to ignore the legal speed limit and travel at whatever speed individuals deem suitable?

There can only be one of those two options - you can't have a speed limit and then ask the police to ignore the people that break it, can we? - Surely laws are made to regulate the whole of society in which we live. Once the members of the general population decide which laws they will comply with and which they will ignore we have anarchy

OR perhaps we should ask the police to turn a blind eye sometimes, maybe set an upper limit each month of the number of tickets they can issue, once that is achieved than can go home early, used to be called Job and Finish

oh dear spike this is not what its all about. Its not to do with law changes, ignoring speed limits or even police ignoring people who break the law. None of that. Its about the police not being allowed to behave in a manner detrimental to the touristic well being of the island. By being a pain in the ass. We need to show potential visitors Fuerteventura is driver friendly and they aren't going to go home and get a 300 euro fine slapped on their doorstep for an offence they never even knew they committed. If they do they wont come back thats a certainty. Once the all inclusives shot its bolt which i've no doubt it will do eventually, this island is going to need all the private accomodation booking, car hiring tourists it can get. But thats another story.
I think i've shot me bolt on the subject as well so even if i cant convince you thats me lot.

Spike On Q

Just one more then - when I visit the UK as a tourist will you tell your local policeman to ignore me if I park illegally or speed down the road past your house - cause if I get nicked I might never return to the UK again   - thanks

Lol its the pansies and gonadless who bow down in craven acceptance to officialdom. :P

The law is the law, a speed limit is a speed limit. If it is being enforced in a corrupt or illegal manner then it does take a brave man or woman to challenge the authorities, but people like you whinging and moaning because :-* you have been caught out are pathetic.

Ivemovedon

Never been done for speeding or any other motoring offence in UK or Fuerte. Get your facts right you irritating donut.

Driving into Corralejo from Puerto del Rosario, I reduce my speed to 70kph.  I am the only person who does this judging from the backlog of irate drivers behind me.

I have now got I do not enjoy driving in Fuerteventura.  You cannot relax for watching your speed not just in towns but the thousands of other speed limit signs on bends etc.   There must be some council official getting their pockets lines for placing orders for the multiple speed limit signs.   Must be on average more speed limit signs in Fuerty per 100 km than anywhere else in the world.

andi

I'm thinking the real reason you've lost interest in driving on the island is down to the horrendous choice of hire car you've made over the years. Nothing to do with speed limits. Little wonder you get stopped a lot........one years it's a bright pink/purple Fiat shopping trolley and this year a bright red boy racers (Opel was it) hatchback with suspension that low you couldn't see the tops of the wheels. Are you getting them at a special price or something?  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I agree totally with comments about the excessive number of speed limits signs. I have asked this question before and not had a satisfactory answer, so I'll ask again:-

Can anyone tell me what the speed limit is on FV2 between the Ikea roundabout and the Triqui roundabout? In both directions the limit is brought down to 40kph on the approach to the roundabout, but it doesn't change again until it's 60kpm on distant approach to next roundabout - mad or what? Or do we need even more signs?

This is one of the most popular places that the Guardia have speed traps. Hidden by the Pine Trees on the right, as you drive towards Triqui. Thay've made a fortune here.

Spike On Q

Yes, and it's on a blind bend so you never know they are there until it is too late - I always slow down where the 60 KPH limit sign is just in case

andi

Here is an interesting fact:

I have only been stopped just the once in 18 months of driving here (both car and bike), no speeding tickets nor camera enforcement notices appearing by surprise on my doorstep. The officers that stopped me spoke very good English (it was a routine roundabout stop) and were very polite and interested in my plans for officially importing my 800cc Triumph Tiger. I imported it 3 months later and never had a stop since. Where is the problem in any of this I wonder? Could it be a slight problem in reading the speed signs that others have difficulty with?

andi

Nothing to do with luck............tell you what I'll report back in another 2 years and it'll be the same outcome.

Ivemovedon

yep and me

I'd also be interested to hear the president of Fuerteventura's opinion in a couple of years time. Might still be the same too.

Spike On Q

Same here andi - car and bike, about 30,000 kilometers a year- NO tickets [my wife had one for crossing a solid white line]

Been stopped a few times for document and alcohol checks - don't mind that if it stops drunk driving

Ivemovedon

i'm just hoping the president shifts some uneeded traffico manpower over to hiding behind the rocks and catching a few of these illegal fishermen.

Snowdrop

Police are as bad back in england.  By us in Cheshire there is a rise in the middle of grass between the two lanes of a dualcarriage way.  The council leaves just this bit of grass to grow feet long then the police radar van hides behind it.  When a certain height I ring the council to complain that it looks scruffy when entering the town of Warrington' on I think the A50, and then ask is it so the police can hide behind it.  They then usually make an effort to cut it.  :D

Perhaps it is the reminder signs that confuse the British - there are more than they are used to
