Being ignorant to such matters, an old Luddite in fact, can someone explain the difference between Broadband and ADSL in simple language

I thought I was buying 10 mg Broadband from Telefonica but evidently it is ADSL - will it affect the way I use my PC for all things like TV, Phone, Videophone, Radio Broadcasts,  Email, Web, VPN, etc., etc.?

Yours Confused

PS: Is this a "General" query or should it go somewhere else more relevant?

If I was admin then yeah the thread belongs elsewhere  ;D

To the average user there really isn't much noticeable difference, in a nutshell Broadband just offers a higher upload rate compared to ADSL.

I wouldn't have thought you would have any issues with it unless you were doing anything above what the average user would.

This 'query' should actually have been posted in the TV, Internet, Computers & Phones section, not general chat  :) :) Perhaps Admin will move it there  :)
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and im not sure about the former .....

The term broadband refers to the wide bandwidth characteristics of a transmission medium and its ability to transport multiple signals and traffic types simultaneously. The medium can be coax, optical fiber, twisted pair or wireless. Wikipedia

So, it's really a generic term.

ADSL is a type of broadband as is ADSL2, VDSL2 and VDSL2. ADSL uses the lowest bandwidth and is the slowest

Don't believe the Telefonica adverts. They advertise 10mb, but you're lucky if you get 6mb. If you complain, they come up with all kinds of excuses.

You will only get 10 meg if you live near the exchange, the longer your line, the less you will get.
Have a look in your router statistics and see what your downstream line attenuation is, the higher the figure, the slower your speed.
Mine is 42db and I get around two thirds of the maximum available.

Looking forward to the day I tick the "One way only" box when booking flights to Fuerte. [:)]

Yep, I'm really far from the exchange so I'm lucky to get 3mb, but It's the same in the UK, the further you are from the Exchange the lower your speeds will be.

Out of interest anyone know where the Caleta exchange is?

On the car park by the Windmill and opposite Miss Americas.

I'm with Telefonica and and get 8 meg when I used to be with Orange I'd be lucky to get 2 meg, and Telefonica is cheaper!

How much tax, IGIC or IVA do people on Telephonica pay?

Do you pay mainland IVA which I believe is 21% or Canarian IGIC which I believe is 7%

The reason I ask is that they have a poster up in the Movistar shop in Atlantico for Fusion which says + IVA, which is the mainland version of VAT.
