Hi Salbag, I sent you a private message.

It is an interesting question - and one that I'm sure affects many older people coming here on holiday, especially with the recent thread re. the EHIC card and repatriation

Tell us the answer Fi, please

Last year the American husband of a friend of mine died in Ireland and the Embassy would not allow her to have him cremated here because his wishes for either burial or cremation were not in his will. Irish law did not recognise their American wedding. I think that they were contesting her right to choose as next of kin. They said that if she removed his remains back to California that she could have him cremated there because their wedding was legal over there. It came as quite a shock to her.

Very interesting question, the answer is yes, non-residents who unfortunately die on the Island can be cremated here, but special permission is needed to fly the ashes home, I do not think it is very complicated, but you do need the paperwork in place.

My old dad is 93 so it was an issue if he'd decided to come to us for a holiday. We're not a family that is concerned with death to much, it's just part of growing up. We don't have funerals for instance but gather for the spreading of ashes and then have a lovely dinner to celebrate the life of our loved one

I suggested we only bought a one way tickets for him and then if he popped his clogs, smuggle him home in my specially designed "Ryanair" coat pocket. He wants to be in Weymouth, where my mums ashes are and where dad proposed to her in 1940.

In the end he didn't come - but I've other friends who might, some I could murder!!!!

I was thinking why not bring ashes home in carry on luggage and not declare it.

No doubt there would be a great deal of paperwork involved to satisfy the Ayuntamiento that you are indeed dead, before permission would be granted
