Caleta beach gets a mention in the papers today. I cant get a great online translation so I will put the Spanish link here in the hope that someone else will translate it.http://www.canarias7.es/articulo.cfm?id=307530

It seems that the urgent upgrading which has been requested for over twenty years has approval from some quarters but not the finance if I am getting the gist of the article.

The plan seems to be to move 17,000 cubic metres of sand to Caleta beach from Costa Calma.

Makes more sense than getting the sand from Gran Canaria like they did in the first place.

I have vague memories of the Saudis importing sand from Newcastle or somewhere in England decades ago .....

fifi

Did they? Gosh. :)

I suppose they wouldnt be allowed to take any from the Dunes in Corralejo because it is a protected area.

Brightspark

I'll bet my left testicle that in 5 years time nothing will be done to that beach.

And in 5 years time you can then bet your right testicle that nothing will be done Barry  ;)

The beach is ok as it is. A bit rocky but so what. Its full of kids having a good time its great to play football and volleyball on. Last thing you need is JCBs all over the place for 6 months.

Captain Sensible

I've never seen anything wrong with the beach either.  We go down there a lot with the children we childmind, and they always have a good time.

Mr Boo Boo

I agree, I don't think that there is anything wrong with beach :'(

Paddster

Ditto - it's just as you wade in...................ouch,ooooh,ooow,sh**t............... ;) ;) ;) ;)

Paddy buy yourself some swimming shoes  :D

A bit of extra sand would be nice on the main beach. Other than that and removing a few rocks here and there I think it is grand too.  I go to the beach down by the Atlantico because it is soft and sandy. :)

So, reading between the lines, 'We've got a load of old sand left over from construction work down South. We'll have to pay to get rid of it, we don't want to do that, so what else can we do with it? Ah yes, Caleta!'

Captain Sensible

Local businesses and associations have funded a scheme to remove rocks from the low tide area on the beach.

A photo I took yesterday:

The Cabildo will be bringing in sand at some stage in the future.

Just in time for our next trip over at the end of the month.

fifi

If it is as easy as that to do it would make you wonder why it took twenty years, and even a trip to Madrid for permission  about a month ago.

Thanks for the update Captain. :)

He had a bet with his left testicle.
The left testicle wins the bet but we don't know what the wager was.

Brightspark, forget your worries and sleep easy tonight . They are safe ;)

Safe for another few years;)

The central Government has no money left to finance the project until at least until 2016 and permission for removing  sand from various parts of the Island to Caleta Beach has been denied.  http://www.canarias7.es/articulo.cfm?id=308892

Captain Sensible

The clearing of stones was continuing yesterday while I was down on the beach, but it's the Costas Dept of the Spanish Government who haven't approved the bringing in of sand from the south of the island.

Costas have now refused permission to add sand to the beach - it could only happen in Fuerte

Strange behaviour.

Does anyone remember the scene in The Great Escape when the prisoners, hiding the dirt taken from their tunnels, walked around letting the dirt sprinkle down the inside of their trousers onto the parade ground ?

Hmmmmm...

PHo

A cunning plan, Admin - where do we get the sand?

I do believe there is a fair bit of the stuff knocking around near the edges of the Island.   ;D  :P
Regards, Neil
Looking forward to the day I tick the "One way only" box when booking flights to Fuerte. [:)]

Common sense has finally prevailed and permission has been granted to put sand on the beach
http://www.masfuerteventura.com/index.php/antigua/costas-autoriza-el-aporte-de-arena-en-el-castillo-pero-modifica-las-condiciones-acordadas-en-la-actuacion.html

What it means is the sand has been postponed until 2014, I heard all work has stopped. Not been down there lately, maybe The Captain can verify this.

"The Ministry of Environment has moved in its budget forecasts for 2014 economic game also may be included for the work, considered "non-urgent".

So it's not urgent for tourists, who keep the Island going, to have sand on the beach  :o
