European Health Insurance Card

Download "European Health Insurance Card" app for your smartphone.
Guide on how to use the European Health Insurance Card in the 27 EU countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. It includes general information about the card, emergency phone numbers, covered treatments and costs, how to claim reimbursement and who to contact in case you have lost your card. Available in 24 languages with easy option to switch from one language to another.
Note: Card cannot be generated or downloaded for use. Cards are issued free by your national health insurance provider.


What is the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)?
A free card that gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the 27 EU countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
How can I get a card?
How does it work?
When you show your EHIC, you will receive treatment under the same conditions and at the same cost (free in some countries) as people insured in that country.
Be aware that each country's healthcare system is different. Services that cost you nothing at home might NOT be free in another country.
What else do I need to know?
The EHIC is NOT an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover any private healthcare or costs such as a return flight to your home country or lost/stolen property.
The EHIC does NOT cover your costs if you are travelling for the express purpose of obtaining medical treatment.

Lost or stolen card
Your health insurance provider will issue you with a provisional replacement certificate and, in more urgent cases, can send it to you by fax or e-mail in the country where you are staying.

We receive "free" health care in Fuerteventura from the Canarian Health Service financed by the British Government via Form S1 [issued to UK Pensioners living in E.U.States]

Our EHIC card is issued by the British Government via the MoWP expats office in Newcastle on Tyne

When we visit the UK we must show our EHIC card to receive emergency NHS treatment [as visitors to Fuerteventura are required to do when visiting a Canarian Government Health Centre]

Only NHS surgeries, drop in centers and hospitals accept the EHIC card in the UK. Hospitals such as BUPA private hospitals do not
