Non-EU worker restrictions

The regional government is to make another bid to enlist Spain's help to curb the number of non-EU nationals allowed to work in the Islands. According to media reports, the party of President Paulino Rivero, with the backing of two other regionalist parties, has submitted a request to Parliament to convene the high-level Spain-Canaries Joint Commission to discuss the possibility of introducing immigration restrictions to protect jobs here. "With 385,000 people out of work at present and 70 per cent of under-25s without employment, the time has come to make sure that the few jobs that are being created in the Canaries are reserved for locals only" said the motion, which invokes a little-used article in the Canary Islands' Statute of Autonomy to press for the emergency measure. The MP leading the initiative, Ignacio González, says there is a, "precedent for the move" given that several EU countries have adopted protective measures to safeguard jobs and Spain itself did likewise to prevent Romanians from flooding the labour market when Romania joined the EU.

Island Connections article.

70% of under-25s jobless??? I thought it was bad enough when they were quoting 50%!

Please, UK and Ireland, don't vote yourselves out of the EU - things could well become very difficult for those English-speakers working here if you do. I just hope I'm unaffected as I have self-employed status here.

I'll be voting to leave it
If it wasn't for the Europe project then things wouldn't be half as bad as they are now.

I think most in the UK will vote to leave.....thats why the Politicos are terrified of having to have a vote...they love the Brussels gravy train too much. But the vote will come...oh it will  ;D

Judging by the amount of money that the UK pump into the EU I would say quite a few to be honest

Frankly I couldnt care less who wants us to leave, all I`m bothered about is that WE leave..that is of course those of us still actually living there.
