Which midnight was that? I mean, we're on GMT at the moment, along with the UK, Portugal and a couple of others, but most of the rest are an hour or more ahead.

Based on Duncolms observations and also the photographic evidence I think we should now assume that Ireland can now be officially known as the main red light district in Europe. ;)  ..............well at least on New Years Eve  :D :

Please note that the Dubs all had their white lights on. :D

That's the problem with twitter; It's not even a photograph. It's from 2006, all the lights are false colour. It's an image meant to portray the following;

Europe at night, showing the change in illumination from 1993-2003. This data is based on satellite observations. Lights are colour-coded. Red lights appeared during that period. Orange and yellow areas are regions of high and low intensity lighting respectively that increased in brightness over the ten years. Grey areas are unchanged. Pale blue and dark blue areas are of low and high intensity lighting that decreased in brightness. Very dark blue areas were present in 1993 and had disappeared by 2003. Much of western and central Europe has brightened considerably. Some North Sea gas fields closed in the period.

My suggestion that you should Google 'Blue Beauty', reminds me of my early days in teaching.

Interactive whiteboards had just come out, but were mainly used as a massive TV to show the kids what was on your computer screen. Implementing ICT into your lessons was encouraged, and was one of the boxes we had to tick should OFSTED come calling. As far as engagement went, they were brilliant! Most households still had old 26" CRT televisions, and you could completely hook the kids with anything you showed them in 'massive vision'. For them, it was like going to the cinema.

The day comes, we get the call, OFSTED are on the way. A more established colleague than I had planned the perfect lesson, so good, the kids raced through the work. It was truly outstanding; the OFSTED inspector sat smiling throughout, and gave knowing nods whenever the teacher would look at him. The problem was the lesson went too well and finished 5 minutes early. Sorry, I should probably tell you what the lesson was. It was a year 6 class, and they were studying a piece of literature in preparation for their upcoming SATs exam. I won't tell you what the book was, that's the point of this post.

As there were five minutes left, my colleague decided it would be a good idea to help the students visualise the text by doing an image search of the book they were reading. Completely unplanned BTW. As I have said, this excellent teacher was a senior member of staff, who had been teaching for thirty years. Unfortunately, she was not IT literate, nor was she internet savvy. Add to this, internet filters were not what they are now.

The gasp from the OFSTED inspector was audible throughout the school as the images appeared. I'm not going to tell you what the title of the book was, but it had something to do with a horse.

Not the one written by Anna Sewell, that could be very embarrassing. Very interesting Post, no wonder i cant find my chinese lantern ;)

Thanks AE1905, believe it or not I spent ages trying to figure out why all of the countries had different coloured lights. I loved the photo (or image) when it was sent to Joe Duffy (RTE) from a Twitter post :D
