I haven't, but I've looked over a car for someone that did. She was impressed with her car, I thought it was an overpriced poor car made to look OK. Unless you know your stuff maybe get someone to look over any potential purchase as I expect you will find both positive and negative experiences of buying from same person dependent on the vehicle.

Plenty of cars for sale listed here. http://granocasion.es/8-coches/listings.html

Ignore the cut 'n shut rumours, my mate bought a lovely Nissan Focus from there.

I bought from About Cars, Weiberen is a really nice guy, you could argue he is a bit more expensive than Granocasion, but his cars come with a two year warranty, and I have not had an issue in the two years I have had it { saying that probably will now}
I have checked Granocasion,s web site and I can not see a warranty offered for any  of them, the other option is Gran Canaria, where I am told cars are cheaper, I just could not be As*d for a couple of hundred euro.

how do you manage the tax side of it ? I was told even with second hand cars you have to go to the tax office with the seller and pay the taxes/change ownership of the car.

is there a eay way round this ? IE pay the tax but not faff about

Buying/selling a car privately is a pain in the proverbial....I have just been through the process of selling to someone I know and it's not easy! Visits to various police/tax offices required...the buyer has to pay 5.5% tax on what they value the car at. Lots of forms to fill in and faffing about. And at the end of the day all they do is change the name of the green ownership form.
And you will need Empadronamiento or at least proof that you own or rent a property on the island.
Or you can pay for a Gastoria to do the whole thing for you at a cost of maybe â,¬200.
If you buy from a dealer such as Aboutcars or Orvecame they will do all that for you.
