Healthcare In Fuerteventura

About a year ago, we had a lengthy chat with both our doctor and solicitor about healthcare in Fuerteventura. 

They both said that the hospital and centro saluds provide an adequate to good service. 

However, once you are discharged, care in the community such as district nurses, carers, home help etc is pretty much non-existent and relies solely on the extended Spanish family to look after ailing relatives.

Most expats end up returning to the UK for care and further treatment.

Sounds like a good business opportunity for someone to set up a nursing/care home here.

Yes sounds a good idea but dont forget there are no Local Authority payments for this service as there is in the UK, and as costs are high they will have to charge accordingly and that means people having to fork out from their own money, just a thought.

My understanding is that each Ayuntamiento has a Social Services department that provides local cover but I wouldn't think it suitable for expats with limited Spanish

The majority of elderly ex pats I have come across over the years go back to the UK once age related illness's start to take their toll. Anything of a real serious nature tends to involve a plane trip to Grand Canaria. I did hear about a ex UK English nurse who offered aftercare, I think she also used to do part time work at the Golf Course in Corralejo or Corrie as I like to call the place.

There was a lady called Lyn (forgot her surname) lived in Caleta who used to provide this service, she looked after a good friend of ours that was terminally ill, but she returned to the UK a couple of years ago to do bank nursing, cant think of anyone else.
The Cruz Roja (Red Cross) in Puerto might offer a service and the Cancer support service also in Pueto offer a care service but that was arranged through the Doctor.
