Didn't realise when we booked holiday there are major improvements being done on the beach. Will they be finished when we come out in 5 weeks time.

Can the Man

No, I don't expect they will be, but there is still plenty of beach you can use in the main beach judging by the photos on the Calta forum, and then there is the beach over beside the Atlantico SC. have a nice holiday.  8)

Most of the beach improvement work is being done in the area of Los Geranios, Beach Cafe etc, currently an enormous 'sand dune' piled up as they work on it. It's actually a really impressive job, and the results are just starting to take shape. The area concerned was previously little used, a pretty scruffy bit of thin sand and rock, and I anticipate a great improvement when it's all finished. In the meantime, as Can says, the main beach by Barcelo is open as usual, as are the beaches further along towards Atlantico. Have a great holiday, weather currently fabulous!

Yeh they were working on the beach on Friday when we were there for a trip to the "resort".

I did notice they had put the original golden coloured sand to one side and have imported from somewhere (Perhaps Tenerife) a rather sickly grey coloured finer looking sand.

Apart from the fact they won't mix well, that Grey is going to look yuck to me like.

Its my understanding, that the "grey stuff" was dredged from the bay here at Caleta, and is only a base layer, they are trying to raise the level of the beach, the original Yellow/golden sand will then be replaced and added to some 100,000 cubic tons of sand to be dredged from the harbour at Rosario, somebody please correct me if I have this wrong.

In a few months time the whole beach front from the Atlantico to the harbour will be stunning , for a town beach it will be hard to beat. If you dont like the colour i will pop down with my paint brush ...

The grey sand mountain has come from the harbour in Rosario ,

This what it looked like on Friday.

Sand from Tenerife  ???  No the sand is Fuerteventuran, from the Harbour in Puerto Del Rosario.

We've waited this long for it to be done, if it takes another 3 months that'll be fine as long as it's done.

Surprised it's been taken from the Harbour to be used on a public beach!
Reason is potentially it could have all sorts of contaminants within, as most commercial harbours I've seen are usually cess pits of pollution etc.
But if it's deemed clean then great stuff and look forward to the finished article.

You're right, but somebody approved it. - Time will tell.

There has been a Dredger the Costa Verde, working working just off the beach for about 4/5 weeks, that is when all the "grey stuff" started to appear, now as the main beach is not tidal, it was not dredging to clear a channel, and I assume/hope it was graded and cleaned before being transported back to Caleta.

What's a cubic ton? Is that a ton or a cubic metre? Just asking, I've never heard of it before.

bluefox

as far as i know  as the sand is being "sucked" up it get's pressure washed at the same time, and again as it's pumped out, and a cubic metre of sand actualy weigh's a ton.

suendrob

A cubic metre (1000 litre) of water is one tonne. Sand is approx 1.5 tonne/cubic metre, the finer it is the more it weighs. (I used to know the owner of a marine aggregates firm. He thought everyone found it as fascinating as he did.)
If the sand is below high water mark, any sediment will wash and settle out over time. Above high water, it'll stay. Probably for ever.
Never underestimate the power of the sea!

I was talking to the site manager today who said the project is due to be finished by the end of November. Thats a lot of work to be done in 9 weeks??

Add at least another month on then, but as i said, for a town beach i think it will be great.
The improvements to the town recently are great, still a way to go, but its getting there...
