We have just left Fuerteventura (after two weeks of almost perfect weather - it was great), and once again we were curious about the strange well surfaced roads with lamp posts between the north end of El Cotillo and the lighthouse.

I expect that the subject has been raised before, but can anyone reveal their history?

Ah yes, the motorway to nowhere..What happened was many years ago, a particular Local Mayor, with a better than average penchant for `brown envelopes` unveiled his master plan to turn El Cotillo into something resembling cross between Magaluf and Ayia Slapper..Apparantly the contractor in all of this was his friend/cousin/brother in law (delete as applicable)..

The locals were up in arms and fought him every step of the way, but not before his `mate`has put the roads and street lights in place. Imagine if you would every inch of those roads having bars, restaurants, strip clubs, neon light and concrete right to the edge of the black stuff..Anyways, one night the locals went out armed with Stihl saws and chopped a lot of the street lights down and they can still be seen, today, lying at the side of the road.

Subsequent Mayors have never been quite that `bent`or desperate to alienate the locals, so what might have been never will be, but the road comes as a suprise, without doubt

Well thats my understanding of it
I HATE computer thingyss

If you look here,   www.google.co.uk/maps/@28.7010878,-14.0091338,3a,24.3y,107.26h,79.04t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sbagt-tUc2yAx84GkblUj7A!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

you will see written on the road, 'Street of Shame' and if you move to the writing above it, you will see 'An island without law corruption'.

This is just off the roundabout along the 'lamp post' road.   :)

Looking forward to the day I tick the "One way only" box when booking flights to Fuerte. [:)]

Paully wrote a great story but not the truth.
Actually it is a lamp post farm.
You can also find them just north of Villaverde and behind las Caletas.
When the light goes on, the lamp post is ripe, and can be transplanted.
