One Winter weekend morning I got up early, put on my thermals, dressing quietly, sneaked downstairs, packed up a bite of lunch, found the waterproofs, grabbed the Rucksack and my boots, picked up the telescope, camera and binoculars, slipped quietly into the garage and got in the car and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour.

There was hail, sleet and snow mixed with the rain and the wind was blowing at least 50 mph. It was horrible. Having driven for a few miles I turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad and worsening throughout the day. So I turned round, went back and pulled back into the garage.

I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. There I cuddled up to my wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, "The weather out there is terrible."

She sleepily replied,

"Can you believe my stupid husband has gone out Birding in that number two."
