I don't know if brightspark can confirm this but I saw it on a social network site and decided to check it out..snopes say it's a real virus..http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/heartbleed.asp It may be a hoax, hopefully it is, but someone more IT savvy can say. Just posted in case.

Yes its true and they suggest that you change your passwords on all important sites like banking and anything involving money, some say do not go into your online banking for 3 days but that may not be practical.

To be honest it's the first I've heard of it Hev, worth reading though so thanks for the link

Just been looking into this a bit more.
There's a site that's been setup here that looks to see if a website is vulnerable: http://filippo.io/Heartbleed/
I found it through a site I use to manage my passwords, it's the first place I went as I was worried that this could affect that site but fortunately it hasn't or there isn't any evidence that it has anyway.
Apparently this bug has been around for quite a while but has only just come to light recently.
If your interested in a good password manager then check out lastpass.com
I have used this for a while now, basically it does all the hard work for you and generates random passwords for as many sites as you like.
No 2 of my passwords are the same now so it's worth looking into if your worried about online security etc.

Ive been on both my business banking and personal online banking and both have messages on them to say they are unaffected by this and i dont need to take any action my passwords do not need to be changed.

Brightspark

this actually made the news on Radio 1 today
Advice is that if a website you use is affected then don't change your password until the site has confirmed that it has updated it's security certificate.

It's a bit unsettling as its the start of the new tax year and a lot of people are adding to their ISAs etc, transferring money between accounts etc. We phoned our banks today and they said there was no worries, they 'Have it all in hand and it won't affect their customers'
