New Footpath from el Cotillo

As a holiday maker to Fuerteventura for many years and a property owner for the last 5 years we have grown to love Fuerteventura and el Cotillo. The new footpath from the surfer's beach south to Playa del Esquinzo is a great development and if any of visitors to the forum have not tried it I would recommend they do. It does not start from el Cotillo but from the southern end of the surfer's beach with a short stretch missing about half way. However I have one serious complaint and that is about the horse riders who use it. Not only are the horse's hooves damaging the surface but the piles of dung left by the horses are making the footpath quite unpleasant in places. I would urge the horse riders to think of others before they destroy this great amenity, there are acres of space for them to ride without selfishly spoiling this new coastal path for the majority of users.

775 people are demanding the closure of the treatment plant of El Cotillo



775 residents and visitors to the village of El Cotillo have signed a document asking  the City of La Oliva to close the sewage treatment plant because it continuously causes inconvenience to neighbors, and  being so near the sea, could cause some irreparable environmental problems.

All kinds of critters roam near the treatment plant of El Cotillo. Rats, hedgehogs, mosquitoes, cockroaches, pigeons and other animals are multiplying daily endangering the health of people. The neighboring houses have  to see the outside world with screens and despite being a small fishing village, no one would think of leaving the door open for five minutes.

I think it would take a massive investment to re-site the plant and it hasn`t so far stopped any developments there. I personally think it is unacceptable and perhaps more could be done to deodourise it. Having said that though we have a fairly modern plant here at home and while it isn`t as rank as the Cotillo one, you are left in no doubt as to what it is as you go past it. It is off the beaten track and only really accessible by a footpath for anyone having no business there. If you`ll excuse the pun.

There are plans to build a new plant near Lajares.   Seems a bit strange 4/5 miles inland.   But no doubt there is some big Euro grant for building ti there.

Many thanks to the person(s) who cleared up the horse dung. Now it is possible to enjoy the spectacular views rather than watching where one is putting your feet (a bit of an exaggeration I know but...)

Can anyone tell me the name of the beach popularly called steps beach? Just so I can get some idea of where it is on the map, cheers.

I think its also called Playa Aquila.
It's just a couple of bays south of Cotillo
south beach. Great spot but go on falling or low tide.

Yes, went once at high tide and decided that it would be prudent to go back to the surfer`s beach! Been to steps a few times but stopped going when a sign appeared warning of dangerous conditions due to damage to the steps.

Zed, the steps are fine, but as Sunray says go after high tide towards low tide, there's not much beach there if the tide is in!
