Pool Cover

How long would you expect a pool cover to last, ours that is 22months old is starting to become brittle & breakdown.

Hi John, I don`t think any kind of plastic lasts long out there. I had one of those expanding hoses & it only lasted a year & wasn`t even in full sunlight ☹️☹️

Hi Windermere, our pool cover which is just on 5 years old does not appear to be breaking down like yours is. The 'bubble' insulation is breaking off the sides but we think this is more to do with wear as it's rolled on and off catching the sides of the pool.

Not sure what grade / thickness ours is for you to compare I'm afraid, but 22 months does seem a little premature.

Quality of the cover and the balance of your pool chemicals are usually the key issues. 700 micron rated covers are best suited here for durability and heat exchange. Expect at least 5 years from a decent quality cover. Cover life can be improved by reinforced edging and covering the rolled up cover from direct sunlight when it is off the pool and on the roller. I would recommend going to a reputable specialist supplier like Solican Piscinas in Matorral who will explain materials and do a home visit to measure and provide a written quote for free. Budget suppliers boasting a comparative low price per square meter are likely to be supplying a product that matches the price. Hope that helps.

Many thanks for the replies so far, very helpful.

I will discuss it further with the pool maintenance guy (a new one in the last 6 months) re the chemical balance as I was worried about in the early days as there appeared to be a build up of chemical crystals particularly on the panel join welds.

We had some of that blue bubble cover as an overlay on our spa floating cover. (it was actually sent as packaging for the floater) Even indoors, not in direct contact with the water, it eventually started to break up.
Look at Pool and Spa Centre site at the GeoBubble products.I doubt that they export, but the products will be available worldwide.
Our new floating cover came wrapped in some of that and it looks like an enormously better product.
It would certainly give you a guide as to what you should replace yours with. There'seven a grade for warmer climes to heat your pool with solar gain.
