Saturday 2.00pm - 3.00pm

The Antanov cargo plane will be bringing technical equipment for the new Disney "Star Wars" Movie to filmed in Jandia. Click image for bigger picture.

Although i would love to be wrong, I don't think we will be seeing the Antonov 225, as pictured, landing here in Fuerteventura. There is only one of these flying anywhere in the world, and it requires a minimum runway length of 3400 metres. The runway at Fuerteventura is relatively long, but at 2400 metres in total it just can't accommodate the mighty Antonov 225. I've read elsewhere that a smaller Antonov carrier is due Friday pm at 14.00, ex Birmingham, and it maybe that the rumour re the 225 has grown from that? What a sight it would be, though!

TamaraEnLaPlaya

I've seen various reports online and in local papers today that state the 225 is due either Saturday or Sunday so who knows!

Woe - where did you get your info from? I'd love to see it landing and happy to spend a couple of hours hanging around, but all weekend .........

Gatta - have to agree it seems unlikely it will be the 225.

Captain Sensible

No-one seems sure when it will be landing.  There are different reports in all the press releases, from 8am this morning until Sunday.

Windermeregolfer

Well Friday 8am has come and gone and no sighting, or NOISE as I am sure there will be, yet

woe10

It's been confirmed by the Airport,  that it will ba the Antanov AN 12 which wiil land on Saturday, not the one pictured.
The press seemed to have mis-led us.

Captain Sensible

After all of the mis-information it was an Antonov AN-12 that landed at around 2pm today. Apparently there were lots of cars parked up with photographers around the airport.
We didn't see it come into land over Caleta as the wind direction changed, so planes were coming into land over Puerto; and they are taking off over Caleta.

woe10

Dozens of cars and people waited for the landing, which came from to North due to South Wind. Landed about 3.25pm
Not the plane the newspapers told us though.

Captain Sensible

It was still parked up this morning when I went to the airport.

Tamkid

Why would anyone be interested? its just a plane, things cant be that bad that a plane landing would be one of the highlights of living in Fuerteventura, why not watch paint dry or something really exciting like kite flying?

Captain Sensible

It doesn't take long for paint to dry here :P
The International Kite Festival is on over the 2nd weekend in November - so we are looking forward to that ;)

The runway at FUE is 3400m long; So landing wouldn't have been an issue. Lanzarote airport only has about 2400m, hence the usual diversions to FUE in difficult conditions.

Gatta is correct; the runway here on Fuerte is 2400 metres long; NOT 3400.

According to airport map info it is actually 3406 metres , the old runway which they now use as a taxiway is 2105 metres.

Without wanting to get into full anorack mode, I think Calculator may be right to correct my posting..... several sources, including a pilot info site give the length as 2400 metres, which I used, but others do give 3400 metres. I see a brief re Lanzarote gives the length there as 2400 metres 'the shortest in the Canary islands', suggesting, too, that Fuerte is longer! Should be simple to establish, shouldn't it, but that's the Internet for you!

Tamkid

I think the runway in Fuerteventura is 2400.7789576 metres long in summer, it contracts slightly during the winter to 2399.789086 metres long.

Watching the sunrise over the runway is reckoned to be one of the eighth wonders of the world but if you see a plane flying past the sun with the runway in the foreground at the exact moment it rises is truly breathtaking.

Perhaps a local retiree with plenty of time to spare could get up there with a tape measure.

I stand corrected ::)

Good Job Johnrugby, for ages I have been thinking in varied around the 2400 metres now I know, thanks.

Surprise Surprise: As previously commented upon, not one Policeman or Guardia was in attendance to oversee the exiting of up to a hundred cars onto the busy main road, which could have caused a serious accident with cars flying down.

Today is Canarian Day, 12 noon, the Guardia are out in force at the Ikea Roundabout in Matorral, stopping and breathalyzing motorists.
