Hi everyone,

We are having a problem with cat's fouling (polite version!) on our astraturf garden whilst we are away. We have tried scarers and cat repellent pellets but to no avail.

Apart from guns and poison, anyone know of any humane ways to deter the cats off our turf

Dunno about out in Fuerte but here in the UK I have been chucking the "puck" out of the espresso machine onto the garden for ages now, it works but I don`t know how. I had the self same problem with cats, disgusting stuff to come across when dibbing in the gladioli corms, I used to hoy it onto the nearest cat owners garden, might not have been their cat of course but still, guilty by association. I tried commercial deterrents  and electronic devices, some seemed to work for a while but the cats came back eventually. And you get rid of the coffee waste without blocking the sink.

Plastic bottles full of water are supposed to deter cats.

Or you could try Cucumbers  ;)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNycdfFEgBc

I use coffee grounds on the Picon - seems to have some effect.  But would not recommend it for Artificial grass as I think it would "clog" it up.  What about trying ground pepper which would easily hose through when you are back?  You can get pepper in  a huge plastic container very cheap in Fran Y Chemi - so not costly to experiment.

I brought a "scare crow" from the uk which I haven't used as the person with the cats moved. One of my friends used one with success. It needs to be connected to a water supply and sends out a spray of water activated by movement.  Perhaps use it when you are there it may deter them for when you are away. You have to remember when you have it switched on as it is very easy to forget and spray yourself.  If you want to try the one I have you are welcome.  I am in  Calleta.

Got an ultra sonic cat repeller from  ebay.

Have been testing it out with some success.

Also use a mixture of jeyes fluid on the pecon but this has to be repeated after rain, also make sure you dilute it as it will not just be the cats you affect you`ll be staying away from the area as well.

You could try onion skins NHS or orange/grapefruit skins, cats hate them.

I had a picon flower bed with cacti growing in I, didn't seen to stop the cats, so I got rid of the flower bed as the smell was terrible. Now I have the flower bed filled in and tiled so it's a nice bench to lay out on or put some flower pots on.

A friend of mine had this problem. She solved it by acquiring a load of tiger excrement from a local zoo and spread that around.

Didn't smell that good but kept the cats away!!

Sounds like the treatment is worse than the problem ::)

I am astonished about "GUNS AND POISON" - I had the same problem in the UK and used pellets and noise emitter - also to NO AVAIL, but at no point would have considered "GUNS AND POISON"?!!?

Now as a person that allowed a cat (18 months old at the time) to move in with us (3 years ago) and having bought a house in FV considering how will I bring the cat over and keep it safe from savage illiterate people, your comment comes as a absolute dismay!!

Sincerely
Alex

I appreciate the semantic of suggesting "GUNS and POISON" as an exclusion, but please does that even need to be said. In all my time I believed that UK nationals (well most) are kind and decent human beings.

jill tie

Nice start Jamesy having a go at someone in your first post,  then realising you had miss read the question.

Half filled clear bottles of water left randomly around the garden apparently work for both cats and dogs.  The theory is light
flickering off the water especially at night (moonlight street lights, car etc) especially if its breezy (think it might on fuerte).
scare both cats and dogs away.

PS welcome to the forum Jamesy

Well, u really are in for a shock; The people are savages!! Get used to it and remember that if your animals interfere with others, they will be eliminated. No such thing as respect or compassion, kindness on this island. Ignore the people and be self-motivated to enjoy the beauty that FUE has to offer.

Can the Man

I seen a video on Instagram show cats being frightened of cucumbers, might be worth a go.

Thanks for the insight, I am now worried even more and wonder if I ought to rethink all.

RobnHelen

Thanks for all the positive replies. We will try the water bottle thing first and see how we go.

The joke about Guns and Poison was exactly that...a joke.

We have owned cats for many years in the UK and would never advocate harming animals.

love cats, dont have one, but the fouling is baaaad! we had the same problem and used to just roll up the astroturf when we went back to scotland. the also sh*T on our flat roof! i bought spring loaded rat traps, placed them around the property. they don't actually catch the cats, but the clap of the spring, and a little nip of the toes works wonders! haven't seen any mess for months

This has to be the most cruel thing I've ever heard. Do you realise the pain and damage a spring rat trap could do to a cat's paw or tail ???? I hope one day you forget a trap is there and get 'nipped' on your toe.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and im not sure about the former .....

Ole Man River

Got to agree with Zedzed & Emmi cats do not like the smell of coffee grounds, they also hate the smell of orange peel !!! Trouble is once the peel has dried out the cats ignore it. The video would suggest that cucumbers are the best deterrent. ;D
We've got cats but our only problem at the moment is the old one has taken to peeing indoors at night on a particular mat!.  8) 8) 8)

Deso

It can't open the wardrobe door then?   ;D  :P

Looking forward to the day I tick the "One way only" box when booking flights to Fuerte. [:)]

Ole Man River

NO. We just pick up the mat instead of keep washing the B thing! :o 8)
