I saw this on a social media site yesterday and thought it only right to share as a reminder at least on how dangerous the roads can be on the island too.

Quote:  "Hi Guys just a word of caution. On way home last night to Ampuyenta at the turn off at the old farm, a 4x4 truck signals to trun left onto the dirt track, a motor cyslist didnt see the signal, did NOT slow down and crashed into the side of the truck, died instantly. Horrible thing to see. Please be taken extra caution when taking a turn from the main road, and look out for those who haven't noticed and not slowed down. This, but for the grace of god, could have been one of us. Its a very very bad turn off. So take care, and BE SAFE"

That is tragic. And so easy for it to happen. I feel sorry for all those concerned.

Saturday afternoon we were leisurely heading from Corralejo to the airport, with plenty of time in hand.
On the coastal road, just past the main parking area on the dunes, (with a broken centre line) the two cars in front individually indicated and turned left across the clear lane and parked facing the sea, several spaces apart. We were now travelling quite slowly, with a red car and a white CDV  behind us and no oncoming traffic in sight.
I wanted to park about 50 metres ahead, so I checked behind me, indicated left and braked gently, to show my brake lights. As I was about to turn, I double checked my mirror, to see a large grey saloon indicate and pull out from behind the small van, to overtake all of us. I braked and watched the car pull back in. I then made my turn and stopped, facing the sea. I watched the three vehicles pass behind me, with the grey car holding well back. Everything ended safely. With the broken centre line as well as the kerb line, either of us was entitled to make our manoeuvre, both of us checked before committing.

It does show how very easily these things can happen.

Very sad to hear about the cyclist ☹️ you have to have eyes everywhere here.  We had a near miss with a wrangler jeep the other week when leaving aguas verde.  the guy was obviously speeding and not sure if he misjudged the road or was plain thick - but he came flying down on the wrong side of the road - luckily he just about managed to get back on his own side 😧

There have been a lot of bad accidents recently that have been reported in the local press websites.  Many of them have been on the FV-2  road between Pozo Negro and Tarajalejo.

We were driving up from La Lajita on Sunday in pretty bad weather when I spotted in my rear view mirror a white car indicating to overtake me which was fine when I then noticed a dark grey car indicating to overtake the white car indicating to over take me, luckily the white car realised what was happening and let the grey one off (which was a local car with young person driving), who then vertook the white car, me and stayed out of lane and over took a truck further up. The white car driver obviously got a fright because they stayed well back until the straight coming up to Las Salinas and it was a rental car.

Friend of ours had a head on crash on the FV1 10 days ago.
The culprit was a Brit who stated that he still had te get used to driving on the right side of the road......
Really disturbing is that it took 45 minutes for the ambulance to arrive!

2 things to worry about

1. The length of time it took for the ambulance
2. The fact that a Driver has to get used to drive on the right, if you don't have the experience then share the driving with an experienced driver or else only take short drives until you get experience

In my experience the British tourists are not the danger. It's locals who take the chances ..especially tailgating and overtaking. Most tourists could only be accused of over caution .

Unfortunately another 2 serious collisions on the FV-2 between Pozo and Tarajalejo single carriageway stretch. This is proving the most dangerous road on the island.
This morning, a fatality at Tenicosquey. A head-on with a works truck. The tourist died. Yesterday nearer Tarajalejo a vehicle overturned early evening.
Take care...particularly on this stretch.
