Mayor of La Oliva

Can anyone give us a succinct summary of what is actually going on with regard to the post of Mayor in La Oliva? I am struggling to get through the auto translate news reports.  Will it have any day to day impact on residents?

My interpretation of a number of different articles:

The old mayor who had been in place for quite a few years was found guilty of being a naughty boy (brown envelope/tender type of naughty) and banned from holding public office for some years. A new mayor was elected or agreed, not quite sure of the process. However, the old mayor ignored his ban and the new mayor, and turned up for work as usual after Christmas, changing the locks to prevent the new guy getting in! He also stopped some meeting notifications from being sent out to council members.
The council staff were unsure of the legality of the documents he signed/instructions he issued etc.
After a day or two the Guardia Civil escorted him from the building (he went quietly as this point) and the new mayor took his place.
The urgent plenary meeting that needed to take place before the end of the year (or risk losing several million euros for some reason) did take place.
Everything should be back to normal and there is no reason that I can see that the public will see any impact except maybe the tender system running as it should.

Very clear summary, Tamara. But I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for any fairness. I don't know who has the job now but I bet he/she is a chip off the old block. Corrupt councillors would only choose a corrupt/corruptible mayor for fear of their own naughtiness being exposed by a do-gooder sweeping clean.

That only gives a partly correct version of events. In any case it has become much more complicated in recent weeks.

The newly appointed mayor, Amador (same party as disqualified one, Arroyo PPM) was elected and then then promptly kicked out of his own party as the other 4 members of the party swore allegiance to Arroyo, the original.

That left the new mayor, Amador without a party and hence without support.

PP, PSOE and Votemos then stepped in to offer support and form a government, but without a majority.

The other side weren't happy with this, so CC, PPM and NC declared a motion of censure with Morales from CC being the new mayor.
They voted without the others being present and declared themselves in charge.

The Secretary, under guidance declared the vote illegal and refused to validate the vote. Electoral Commission and Canarian Government also involved saying Amador is still Mayor, but the locals are telling them to mind their own business.

That's where we are. CC are trying to get a new motion of censure.

It has huge impact for LA Oliva as a townhall with such uncertainty can't do a proper job for the people.

Antigua is another mess. The mayor already want sto return to Cape Verde. They decided to fix the beach in CAleta without first finding out where to get the sand, lol.

Its a wonder the Island functions at all  God forbid Morales, gets back in, she wants all the tourists banning, she hates them..They have the mentality of goat herders and their grasp of democracy is tenuous. I don`t think I could live there under such a system at all...

The mayor of Antigua is without doubt the most arrogant and corrupt person I've ever had the misfortune to meet. If I never come across him ever again it will suit me.
