Electric Motorised Scooters - Caleta

Once again, people are talking about the menace of these scooters in Calata, with two letters in this month's "The Voice".
One letter from the owner says, "no children under 16 unless accompanied by an adult."
These kids I saw this morning were between 12 and 14, no parents. At least these kids were on the cycle track, but I've seen them racing up and down in the Town Centre.

Same problem in Corralejo.
Besides, as they are motorized vehicles, should they not have a liability insurance ?

Don`t worry, once someone wakes up the Guardia to this problem and they decide fines are warranted, you won`t see these things again for dust. The sooner the better, they are a damn menace and the ones I saw in Correlejo were being used by under 16`s...Mind you some of the older ones were just as bad..Menace

They need to get them some bicycles so they can get some of that weight off em.

I agree they're accidents waiting to happen, the way they're being used. "Parental supervision" doesn't seem to mean anything to some parents nowadays. But they aren't exactly motor-bikes with powerful engines, just a tiny electric motor. Are they actually any more dangerous than cycles? They don't seem to go any faster; they're just a novelty and a more appealing idea for a holiday activity than pedalling (can do that at home, after all).

A 10 kg scooter with a 40 kg kid travelling at 15 km/h represents a force of 868 joules.
If you get hit (probably from behind) by a very small surface with that force.... believe me, it hurts (to say the least)

A baseball power pitcher can throw a speedball at 165 km/h.
It hits you with a mere 150 joule

When we decided to rent these out in Caleta we first contacted the police to find out about regulations. We were told that to rent them people would have to be 16 and able to produce id, they would have to stay off the roads only go out during daylight and wear a crash helmet.  We adhere to these rules strictly and lose two out of  three rentals because unfortunately we're not the only ones renting them. We have complained to the police on numerous occasions even supplying photos like the one above but it seems our competitor doesn't have to adhere to the same laws which as most of you know is about right for this island.
