Relax.

Don't worry about giving the wrong impression. I often go out on my own and talk to strangers in bars. I may be giving the wrong impression but who cares? As long as you - and they - are enjoying it, there is no problem.

The way I look no-one would ever assume I'd have the audacity to try pulling.  :(

I'm rarely on my own here but there are plenty of people who are. Hubby and I make a point of making it clear that we're happy to share our table at a bar or restaurant if they're getting full. We've chatted to lots of singles and couples that way.

If I was in the business of opening up a restaurant (which is always a dodgy proposition here), I'd have a big "table d'hôte". Don't know the best term in English, but I'd welcome all singles to come and have a seat there. I wouldn't stop them using a table for two on their own if they preferred, but I think it would be nice for them to group together. When I lived in France I ate in several places where there was just long trestle tables and you just took the next seat(s) available, whether you were single or in a group. They always had the best atmosphere, though not the place for a really romantic meal.
