Using your UK/ROI phone in Fue getting cheaper-for now

I know it's easy to get a local sim and avoid roaming charges altogether, but, for folks who don't spend long enough in Fue to make this practical....some good news - in the short term at least.
It has taken a while, but, EU legislation forcing mobile operators to curb their roaming charges enters another phase next week.
New maximum prices as of 1st July 2014
Making a call - 19c    (29c in 2012)
Receiving a call - 5c  (8c in 2012)
Sending a text - 6c  (9c in 2012)
1mb of data - 20c   (70c in 2012)
These price caps will automatically be applied to all customers of all EU based networks from 1st July 2014.
Furthermore, in April, MEP's passed legislation that will end roaming charges for using a mobile phone while abroad by December 2015. This means that the cost of making a call or downloading internet data in another EU country will be the same price as at home.
Obviously, roaming charges have been lucrative for mobile operators and have remained uncapped for many years, and  operators will be looking for a way to recoup their lost profits. So, enjoy while you can, but, keep an eye out for contract increases or 'special' deals which turn out to be not so special after all. Fortunately there is still a lot of competition in the mobile market and we should still be able  to shop around to get the best deals.

My new contract with EE allows me to use my contract minutes and texts anywhere in the EU without charge. Asked when my data would become free....no answer on that one...looks like the Dog & Duck for Specked Hen and Wifi for the time being
