Spike On Q

I was thinking of going fishing again today but I've run out of bait - anyone got any ideas?

Well Spike, As soon as I get there I usually go to the super-mercado and get some raw squid, sardines, sweet corn, tough white bread, pepperami and most of them do whole frozen prawns especially for fishing. A good thing to keep about the house or in your fishing bag is tinned pulpo in olive oil or brine and a small tin of spam is always a good bait to get you started. Raw chicken works well too but watch the hygiene; salmonella and all that.
Stale bread soaked in sea water with some sweet corn added or tinned beans or peas will attract all sorts of species. take it in a small bucket with a small kitchen ladle or long-handled spoon to keep your hands clean and heft it out. you can also add a load of white rice for groundbait - soak it 'til it's soft and then microwave for about 5-7 minutes.
If you use prawns, squid or sardines, though, you'll need to take your shopping receipt with you in case you're checked on the rocks by the police who will also want to see your rod licence.
Tight lines.
PS where are you going fishing by the way?

Spike On Q

Thanks for a thorough reply Waggy - you've helped me no end

My rod has been licensed for some years

Where?  well I shall look around to wherever the sport appears good

PS Just a tips on the squid - make sure it's very fresh and clean, don't want it to be too chewy?

Fishing in the UK - use tinned ham it often works wonders but make sure it is kosher ham or maybe halal

your rod licence expires after 3 years, Spike. You'll need to go to the govt office in Rosario to renew it - only takes about 1 1/2-2 hrs if you go about 9 am.
Squid can be cleaned up or not; the fish aren't fussy.

Hi Waggy

Just a quick fishing report:

Conditions were fair this week-end and we had quite a few bites - enjoyable

and make sure you get that rod licensed. Wouldn't do to have the local pillar of the community getting his collar felt.

Hi spike, nice to hear you did OK. I shall be over there myself in 3 weeks time and I'm going to have a go at those Bonito at Salinas del Carmen with assist-hook lures.Shore jigging, Fuerteventura, February 2013
Vlad is a leg-end in his own lifetime.

What methods did you use and what species did you catch; and off the rocks or near the beach end.

And here's one I caught earlier:

looking at that shopping list from mercadona, there'd be no need to go fishin, you'd get 2 or 3 dinner's outa that lot !  ha ha ! :D  ;D

Sorry bluefox, but shopping's like hand-bags and shoes - doesn't really do much for the hunting instinct.

No, Spike: I'll be there in 2-3 weeks and it's very much FISHING SEASON ON.  First stop, Av Lucha, Rosario, to get my 3 year rod licence renewed and then, after a mooch around the place, off to Salinas del Carmen to have a go at those Bonito with some new lures I've just made. I get a big kick out of catching stuff on my own rigs.
Then back to Gran Tarajal for dinner, fish of course, at the Fishermen's Restaurant on the fish-wharf frontage. Bliss!
