Help with tv

Hi all,
We are having problems with our tv, we have a dish on the roof and a sky box,
Which we brought over from the uk and a white card.
When it was first connected about 3 months ago, we got a reasonable amount of channels, 80 ish.    Now sometimes we have none when we turn it on, and then the next day the channels come back on there own, we have had the LNb replaced if that is the correct term, but still having probs.

We do have another sky box and card back in the uk, but was wondering if it is worth bringing, or is it better to get a system here.
Our system was originally installed by digital dave, not sure what size the dish is.

So my question is what are our best options here, would be nice to have a more reliable system as we have guests staying all the time, a choice if different languages would also be of benefit , but not essential.

Your problem stems from the Sky box reverting back to the default transponder which is fine for the UK as it is a quite strong signal, over there you need to set your default to a strong one (12.207 Sky News).
Some boxes will retain settings while others don't especially when powered off.
The box will try to collect channel/program info from the weak transponder and cant, hence no channels.

Just go into the menu and change the default transponder, hidden menu can be accessed using the following.
On the OLD EPG (so Sky+ boxes), it is :

Select

On the NEW EPG (so Sky+HD boxes), it is :

Services
0
0
1
Select
Enter the number 12.207 then scroll down and save.

Thanks globetrotter, I have checked and found we already point to that transponder no. I think the problem lies with the fact that guests or cleanes are turning off the power or disconnecting the sky box , and so we lose the channels.  So will have to make sure that they leave it alone.


On a separate note, I have seen the smaller digital dishes and receiver boxes in nor y sur, does anyone know what channels you can get with these?

You are really looking at Nilesat with a smaller dish, quite a few films and TV series that are broadcast in English but with Arabic subtitles.
If thats the case with guests turning power off just leave the Sky box on overnight and it should have found the channel line up by morning.

I am wondering if that was what the hotel was using in Abu Dhabi that we stayed at.  It had quite a few good American channels showing movies, and
Channels in different languages. Which would be good considering that we get guests from various countries.  I am not bothered about itv and Bbc.

Yes you can use your existing dish although requires re aligning towards that satellite, you can use a smaller dish if I can remember an 80cm should suffice.
Also if you only have a Sky box you would need a generic satellite box (ie Televes from NortySur) as the Sky box is meant only for Sky, whereas a generic box will pick up most satellites including Sky channels.
Its not a very technical job to install the only really sticking point is latching on to the correct satellite, but that is really only common sense, look which way the other smaller dishes are pointing to get the rough direction, then use a simple meter to get the strongest signal.
One point to watch if doing it yourself is unlike a TV cable, the cable from a satellite box carries an electrical current, only a small one but if connections are crossed will fry the chips in the box.
