The regional Met Office has issued a strong winds alert for the Canaries for Monday and Tuesday.
Wind speeds are expected to top 85km per hour in many areas, particularly upper parts of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma and La Gomera. El Hierro has activated its local emergency plan in anticipation of adverse wind effects. The blustery conditions and low cloud have already brought severe disruption to Tenerife North airport this morning.
A German holidaymaker was killed at the week-end in Fuerteventura after being crushed by a falling palm tree at his hotel.
The accident occurred in Morro Jable at around 4pm yesterday and is believed to have been caused by the strong winds blowing in the south of the island. A second man, aged 42, suffered serious injuries, although they are not thought to be life-threatening.
It's very windy in Caleta today, although there's clear blue sky and sunshine. The roughest winds are expected on Tuesday.

The windy conditions affecting much of Tenerife and the other Canary islands are expected to stay until Friday, says the regional Met Office.
Winds of up to 90 kmh have made life difficult in many parts since early yesterday, particularly at Tenerife North airport. A total of 13 flights were cancelled and 17 (including many from Madrid) had to be diverted to Tenerife South because of the dangerous combination of rain, wind and thick fog at the airport. Although the force 7 winds at sea are making for spectacular sights, with waves of several metres forming offshore, the authorities have reiterated warnings to the public to steer clear of seafronts to avoid accidents.
