Title: MAD CYCLISTS
Post by: wixy on May 14, 2012, 17:06:27 PM
When is somebody going to do something about the mad cyclists in Corralejo, who cycle so fast on the pavements--does a tourist have to get injured or be killed before some action is taken?Selfish idiots is all I can say

When is someone going to do something about the gormless tourists that wander along in blissful ignorance on the cyclepaths. Brain dead cretins is all I can say.

theres also a few skateboarders need either their arses kicked or an intensive course on pavement etiquette.

As a Corralejo cyclist, I am constantly having to take evasive action to avoid tourists meandering down the cycle lanes, but the worst of all, are the pushchair brigade- without looking they tend to just stick the pushchair, complete with offspring, directly into the path of oncoming cyclists, some even do the same thing when crossing the road.

Out here cyclist by law have to use cycle paths where available, and are also not allowed to cycle on main roads where the pavement is wide.

The other point which needs to be made, is that tourists think that they have right of way on pedestrian crossings, this is only true on the raised ones, or where they are painted Blue and white.

The normal marked crossings are actually where it is compulsory for pedestrians to cross and they can be prosecuted for crossing elsewhere, at these crossings cars have right of way - though most motorists stop they are not obliged to - so don't start swearing and shouting at car drivers if they don't instantly stand on their brakes when you are near a crossing. - The law here is different.

On Av. Grandes Playas, at its junction with High street, are two crossings. One is a continuation of the High street cycle lane, and the other, set further back up Av. G.P. is a pedestrian crossing. Guess which one the gormless buggy brigade use.

I make the score Mad Cyclists 5, Pedestrians 1 so far.

The first thing we found we needed after purchasing bicycles in Corralejo was some noise making equipment. Straight back to the shop to get bells for them. At least we could then make a noise at all the obstructions on the cycle paths. Even that appears of limited effect at times.

Is that 6,1 now.

OK Sometimes I score an own goal.
I am a pedestrian sometimes and have been known to stray onto the cycle paths to avoid the delightful vegetation which is taking over quite a few of the pavements around town making them somewhat of an obstacle course.
No excuses on the main drag though.

Its great to start someone off indeed. I agree there are many idiot tourists who walk on the cycle paths BUT there are as many idiot cyclists who couldnt give a damn and do what they like at speed so make that an own goal for some of you who didnt read my starting point, enjoy the sun and be careful as just heard 2 brits killed in gran canaria--NOT BY BIKES,but by the weather!

No no no wixy. You exaggerate , there are nowhere near as many cyclists as tourists, just imagine if there were. Calm down and present reasoned and logical topics and maybe you will get listened to.

Yes Yes Wixy. Your initial post is correct. Getting buzzed by cyclists is not fun. There are Mad Cyclists but they are not responding on here. You are getting responses from some reasonable cyclists. When we are in a shared environment with the bikes we are slow - walking pace and careful when in close proximity to pedestrians. I've also seen cyclists operating without due care and attention. Accidents waiting to happen for sure and these guys are in need of some discipline.

i'm with wixy on this one. cyclists and skateboarders should be culled to manageable numbers along a few gaurdia, solicitors, estate agents and A/I owners.

To give  both sides of the argument. I was walking to the chemist on the main drag in Corralejo yesterday, and in the space of a hundred yards, 3 separate cyclists wizzed passed me, and a skateboard . These cyclists and skateboarder, were a danger to pedestrians. These cyclists should not have been on the path.

Thanks to most of you for supporting my comments, pity zedzedeleven felt it WASNT A REASONED AND LOGICAL TOPIC,however its been proved by comments that it is a logical topic,so there! Lets just hope the cyclists can observe the rules when the centre of Corralejo is completed with the works, but somehow the dickhead cyclists will prob continue their selfish behaviour,ONLY TIME WILL TELL HEY. Cheers to all and enjoy the sun.

Never mind cyclists in Corry.    The bike brigade in Edinburgh think they are a total law unto themselves.

Approaching red lights they just mount the pavement and round the corner and to f*** with us pedestrians.
They get huge area of red cycle lanes and at traffic lights they are given the front area and do they pay for any of this oh no.  No tax, no registration number, no insurance.
Beware if a cyclist rams into your car even when you are stationary it is deemed to be the motorists fault for being there.

M if you still lived on the Meadows and looked out your window you would agree with me.   That area is just a nightmare with all they eco student types.

BAN ALL CYCLISTS FROM PUBLIC ROADS AND PAVEMENTS

Nothing has been proved wixy, only that you have a distorted and biased view point. And your own cosy ability to ignore the facts when you have already made your mind up. Most people indeed ! Dear god, you should be a politician with your ability to manipulate data.

Well a short input from me who cycles to work everyday. Pedestrians do not consider cyclists much when they are stepping into the road. An example of this was 2 weeks ago when a pedestrian stepped onto the road right infront of me as i was cycling along in a bright yellow jacket on a a bright yellow rucksack. I braked sharply (i have hydraulic disc brakes) and went over the handlebars hitting my head onto his head and knocking him out. I fell into the path of a single decker bus that fortunately stopped quite quickly and did not hit me.

I also cycle to work everyday, down the main street of Corralejo, I have a bell, and also a hooter.

The bell is my polite way of informing pedestrians they are either on the cycle path or about to step onto it, and asking them to give way. However when this is ignored as they are on the phone, have headphones, or earplugs stuffed in their ears, then I resort to the hooter - even then some people ignore it and I have to shout to get their attention. Then they tend to look at you as if you are to blame, often resorting to language I have never heard before....!!

It`s ignorance in the main Austin. Tourist welcome packs should include a paragraph identifying the cycle lane and explaining the correct use of it. Owners/publishers of helpful booklets could include a bit of information as well ! I suppose its too much to ask the council to repaint the cycle logo`s and mebbe put a few signs up.

Well said.  As part of the Edinburgh Cycling brigade the major concern is pedestrians who with their ears full of I tunes spend most of their time texting as they cross the road - but not on the green man just when and where they like.

And then there are the drivers who want to become pedestrians.  Parked at the side of the road and just waiting to open their door into the traffic...never their fault as all we cyclists will get is a mouthful of abuse from them as we take evasive action by swerving into the traffic and guess what.... we then get more abuse from those drivers who are not yet pedestrians as they travel in excess of the speed limit.  They don't mind as long as you don't scratch their paintwork as you fall into the road.

Then as happened last night you get the driver who thinks it is fun to drive at you only to just miss you as you take avoiding action while they give you a variety of gestures.  Brainless moron but I have his number.

Then we get the irresposible cyclist.  It is funny in all these conversations that every cyclist is a crazed maniac while every motorist and pedestrian is an angel. (Supported by every BBC item which always finishes with an attack on the irresponsible cyclist and not the motorist) However I believe that if you look at the stats more cyclists are killed by road users than road users are killed by cyclists.  More cyclists are killed by the actions of pedestrians on the road than pedestrians are killed by cyclists cycling on the pavement.

Sad fact is the car driver can afford to be careless the cyclist cant. If theres going to be an injured party in a crash it won't be the motorist. I've seen enough cyclists wobbling and weaving around and hogging the road three abreast to know there are plenty that are a serious menace to themselves and everyone else.

Sorry but it is the sheer arrogance of the Edinburgh Cycle Brigade that gets me.   They do not pay anything to cycleways, cycle lanes and yet they want it all.   This of course no thanks to the stupid council who let that nut case Be** cause total chaos in Edinburgh with his stupid green ideas.   And what a hypocrite went on about not owning a car but his girl friend drove him everywhere or he used taxis charged to the council.

As someone who has been knocked over a few times on pavements by arrogant cyclists.    I am not talking about stepping out in front of them but just inconsiderate cycle brigade.

Pay road tax and insurance and then you can have your own space until then take you chance on the road with the other road users.

OI ! Now then Danny lad, where do you get the idea that I, as a cyclist don`t pay road tax? It just so happens that I have to pay road tax for a van, a car, and a hooge motorcycle. Unfortunately I can only drive one at a time so under the present system I am getting reamed. No road tax but fuel tax would suit me fine. I reckon I am "owed" a bit of free road use.
Can you also elucidate on the few times you have been knocked over by arrogant cyclists? I`m sure we are all ears, dying to know why you have been so unlucky and how you knew, lying there with your kilt up over your eyes, that they were arrogant?
And finally, cyclists have a perfect legal right to use roads, more so than the johnny come lately motorist but less than the horse riders who were here first. And finally Dan, one cyclist takes up less room than one motorist alone in his car, if all cyclists packed it in and used their cars it would mean less room for everyone.

Jeremy Clarkson would have all cyclists taken out and shot in front of their family. Bit over the top , i'd just have em shot.

Clarkson makes a living by being pseudo controversial, can`t really be anything else can he, being a fully paid up member of the beeb establishment. We all know he is a fake, if he was for real he would have been booted out years ago. Never the less, we all enjoy top gear as it has little to do with motoring and more to do with exploiting the eccentricities of the main presenters. More a comedy show than anything else.

What I want as an Edinburgh cyclist, don't know if I am a Brigade member, is to be able to cycle with safety on our roads.  I do not condone cycling on our pavements but have seen pedestrians and cyclists co-existing in many european countrys.  I can however understand why some may do it for safety grounds.

What I don't understand though is how we as cyclists don't pay for it.  I pay road tax for my car but chose, like many others, not to fill our roads and pay excessive parking charges.  I pay my council charge and a host of other taxes to local and national government.  I would applaud your call for all users of the thoroughfares to pay on a per use basis based on the damage they cause which would no doubt result in a refund to many cyclists and severe increases to all forms of taxation paid by those that choose to travel by oil powered vehicles.  And while we are at it can we get rid of all the subsidies that "public transport" receive so that we all pay the true cost of travel.

Alternatively appreciate that for every cyclist on the road (or pavement) that is one less car to block up the streets hence leaving the motor car, bus or taxi a free route to get to its destination.  Appreciate the fact that we are reducing the polutants in the atmosphere (as long as the hot air bridage shut up) and the fact that, with the exception of the pedestrians that we run down, we are reducing dependance on the NHS through being generally fitter and happier.  Now if we could only get the motorist to give us more space that may result in fewer deaths (there have been four this year in Edinburgh)and injuries on the roads and invest in cycle lanes - perhaps even shared paths or pavements.

As a former Edinburgh cyclist and now a Fuerte one I have to point out that it is far safer cycling here than in Edinburgh.  In the latter I've been knocked off my bike by taxis and a bus - I ran into the open door of a BMW when the woman opened it right in front of me, lots of damage to my bike, a bit of damage to me, but all the Beemer owner was interested in was the scratch on her paint...  fortunately the Plod got involved, and I got the damage to my bike paid for...eventually

So far here I have only fallen off once (hope this isn't tempting fate)and that was when I went into a very deep pothole, also I was hit from the side by a delivery persons sack barrow, which managed to break my rear axle and crack the frame on my bike... Otherwise it is only dodging errant pushchairists, and pedestrians...

It always appears in these discussions and in this case it took some time before the "Bikes don't pay road tax and therefore forfeit any rights on the road" came up.
There is no such thing as Road Tax. It is Vehicle Excise Duty and now related to CO2 emissions etc. If you choose the right type of car, you will pay no VED so why would it be applied to any non polluting pedal powered transport.
No Argument There

Well said mac, it`s more about jealousy envy and resentment than anything. Those unhealthy unfit motorists sat fuming in their cars secretly want to be able to do what cyclists can do, even the pavement riding and the red light jumping, but they can`t. They are just too unfit, too apathetic and too frightened. Shame really because it isn`t too difficult. A modest two or three hundred quid will buy a good second hand hybrid for tootling around the locality and the odd trip out when weather permits.
