Tricky one, I mean they are noticeable and do exactly what they say on the tin.

The only other way I could think of as a means of making them stand out more and getting more people to use them (as that's kinda what you want) would be maybe a floating widget?
http://sharethis.com
Have a good one

The promo bit on it is optional but it could allow you to use a 300x250 ad in there if you wanted it, plus the social networks are customizable too as you probably know.

I'd be inclined to do away with the myspace share icon though and replace it with a network more popular, linked in for example or Google+1

Looking at the maps aswell, look pretty good, would enabling Iframe bbcodes not make the forum vulnerable though or do you have a bit of control over the iframe contents?

floating on left - will look into that.
and changing defaults - yup good suggestions.

You're right on both counts. Normally there would be a danger in allowing iframes on the forum so I've set it up so that the code you'll paste will only include the parameters for latitude, longitude, zoom level, map type and marker name.
eg:
"?=28.422529544398305,%20-14.01643857514648=15=Your Name=roadmap"

The rest of the URL  is completed behind the scenes.

And I think that you should be able to configure it to float on the right too, sure I saw somewhere in the code that it's possible.
And as for changing networks, I did read somewhere that using Google+1 will please the google lot and push more results etc....
I use +1 on my sites although it doesn't have as much clout as facebook or twitter

I'm not sure about the float moving with you. Seems a bit in your face. Maybe it should be static....

What do you reckon?
Title:

Static would be much better. It looks like its stalking you on the page.[;)][:D]

I'd probably remove the "share this topic" line from the coding as it's the only thing that seems to overlap on anything on the page:

apart from that it looks pretty good!

I'm on the side of no floating widget, it's a bit in your face and does get a bit annoying as you scroll. I'm for head and foot of page.

Mrs W

ps. Best not show this thread to Mr W or he will never be off the bloody forum if he thinks there's any techy bits etc

Which browser and OS are you using? It doesn't overlap with anything on mine but I haven't yet checked all the possible variations.

edit:
yup I see it in ff and opera but not in safari on lion.
I've moved it down a bit to avoid the overlap and I'll leave it there for today to get more feedback but I'm guessing the moving div isn't going to be well received.

Got to agree with the above on this one.

If it stayed still while you scrolled it wouldn't be as off putting, on my Chrome (actually a superior version and without the spy stuff, SRWare Iron) it seems to overlap but doesn't actually.

As the forum`s most senior luddite, I have no dealings at all with twitter. facebook etc. I don`t like the floaty thing, it reminds me of the adverts on football matches, the ones that flicker and flash on and off. Very distracting and a cynical misuse of technology. Not that I watch football, just an observation from what has appeared on the news. Perhaps if you are an "Ammers" fan the adverts are more entertaining than the football !

oooo, you can be sooooo cutting at times Zman;)
Title:
Post by: zedzedeleven on April 18, 2012, 15:55:53 PM
Not that I know owt about it, but if I was a footie feller I`d like to be like the late Brian "big`ead" Clough, I found him very entertaining. Georgie Best`s antics made me smile as well. None of which has owt to do wi` football. Oh, and I admired the cool guy that did that mermaid kick and scored a goal, giving his manager a heart attack in the process. Also liked Gazzer, I saw him once take a ball on his chest, drop it to his knee, and then kicked it and scored a goal at a crucial moment in the match. Cool as a cucumber. How can a guy handle pressure like that but go to pieces in the pub?

Maybe the one from the other site would have worked better as it's more of a static tab, meaning it doesn't glide up and down, just my opinion anyway

Yup.
The moving thing was just annoying.
It's now in a fixed position.

I've had a quick fiddle  and removed the thing from phones - I also removed the top banner plus the left and right hand columns- it seems better now - (tested on a 3gs) .
When i have more time I'll tittivate the layout further, come up with something in respect of our advertisers (banners are ineffective on phones anyway) and check out tablets and some other OSs and devices but there are a limited number I can get my hands on.
I haven't concerned myself whether the device is portrait or landscape as yet. On my phone it now works fine on both.

Let me know which of the other myriad devices have problems.
