Title: Persimmon - kaki Fruit
Post by: woe10 on January 03, 2012, 22:40:03 PM
For all you health addicts in Fuerte. It´s the season for the best Persimmon Fruits (Kaki in Spanish). These are my favourite fruit, and they have some great ones in Spar at Atlantico at the moment. Also known as the "Fruit Of The Gods", they are so good for you. Low in fat, no cholesterol, high in fibre and carotenes. High in anti-oxidents that attack cancer causing free radicals, good for combating piles and hiccups, and lower blood pressure. There´s almost nothing they´re not good for. Eat it whole, peeled or not, although the skin´s a bit thick. Great for making smoothies too. One a day will keep the doctor away. They look like a large orange tomato. Google "Nutrition Persimmon" for more info, Yummy.

I had some a few weeks back when in Fuerte along with some fantastic Canarian mangoes, they were really good, choose the ones that slightly give when gently squeezed

I LOVE nisperos too, but the ones in the supermarkets look bl**dy awful mostly.  Eaten fresh from the tree is the only way for me! My friend on the mainland has a garden full of them.........due for a visit I think!

Had some lovely nisperos from Inpescasar in Corralejo today. Has anyone tried growing the stones? I read somewhere that thay can grow 4 - 5m high so I was thinking of trying one in a large pot if I can get them to germinate, hoping the pot will reduce the height! [:D]

I grew a nispero from a stone.  Took it back from Spain to UK.  It grew in a pot to about 5ft tall and I kept it outside summer and winter for 6 years.  Then along came a particularly vicious frost one Winter and it died.  Am currently trying again !

Emmi - did you get any fruit on your pot grown nisperos?

No fruit, but it was outside in quite harsh condition on the seaside.  If it had been indoors, it is possible I suppose.

Apparently, the Nisperos are self- fertilizing, so if conditions are right should eventually produce fruit.
