Title: High Cost of An Unexpected Funeral.
Post by: woe10 on May 05, 2017, 00:43:28 AM
Once again the subject of the cost of a funeral arises, following the Facebook Fundraiser for a Caleta De Fuste Resident who died suddenly last week from a heart attack, aged 50.
Not having the required funds to pay the Funeral Directors their fee of about â,¬3500, (which they require up front by the way, before they'll even take the body from the morgue), a money raising fund was set up on FB.

It's surprising how many people on the Island are going about their merry way without considering the inevitable, without any funds. I've seen it many times here, where friends and family are left to pick up the tab.
It's worth speaking with one of the Insurance Companies here, such as Mapfre, who do a Funeral Expenses Policy. This will save a lot of unwanted heartache at the end.
I know it sounds a bit macabre, but has anybody had experiences of this, to share on here.

AFIK, cremation can be arranged directly at the crematorium. this would cost about 600 euros. Avoid the funeral directors for this.

The 3,5k is for all the rubbish that goes with it.

No money - the townhall will eventually pick up the tab, it's their duty. Locals have been in this situation also. IT can take years for them to comply.

We have what I call a death policy with one of the insurance companies - seguro de decesos.

Thanks for that info calculator. I for one will be going for the cheaper option. I don't find the other un-necessary.

The link for the fundraiser isn't FB, I made a mistake.

Hi Calcuator,

in reference to " a death policy with one of the insurance companies - seguro de decesos." would you have a link to it or the providers details?

Thanks

A very large number of the ex pats living here think why waste money preparing for a funeral when you can spend it during happy hour. Hence the fact people are always calling around collecting towards Tom, Dick or Harriets funeral costs. Happened dozens of times since I've lived here. Although to be fair a couple of those were for Spanish residents.

Same here, seen it dozens of times. It's more annoying when the collections are for sick people who have never paid a penny in Social Security.

Calculator, or anyone else for that matter :D Is there anywhere that can confirm this, or anyone that has actually spoken to the crematorium staff that this is indeed a viable option for anyone not requiring a service or other funeral services? It would be very useful to know before one is forced to insure for peace of mind at 5 times the cost. Any forum member  with good enough Spanish to get it from "the horses mouth" as it were?

I've heard that the Cabildo is liable for the disposal, for want of a better word, of people who have passed away and there is no funeral. â,¬600 is what I heard.
I had a friend in Tenerife who passed away last year. He was cremated without a funeral.

From a Lanzarote Website;  http://www.lanzarote37.net/en/detailansicht-wissenswertes/article/saying-goodbyebrthe-funeral-process-in-spain/6.html

It is usual in Spain for all families to have funeral plans or funeral insurance, as long term preparation is seen as the better option financially for meeting the high costs of burial which can reach between â,¬3,000 and â,¬4,000. Many funeral directors will ask for full advanced payment therefore it is normal for the whole family to be insured, including the youngest children.

Cremation is a much cheaper option than burial and usually costs around â,¬400 but prices are currently on the rise. The process varies slightly to the UK because during the cremation family members must wait outside instead of attending the procedure.
