Not welcome ?. If they go half the businesses in Corralejo are gone too.

Why do you have this thing about Corralejo, they do not in any way  own half of the business in town, in fact the majority are uk run, and the Italians like most of the town only rent, if they pull out its like Costillo they stand empty.

Depends which part of Corralejo you are in that defines who runs what. Up top and down and off  the high street English maybe. But the old town and port seems mostly Italian to me. I even spoke to an Italian bar owner down the cobbled road who himself told me there were too many Italians vying to run businesses in the area..and so what if they rent. You don't have to own a building to run a business from it, so it's hard to see your point..

And i don't have a thing about Corralejo..... Or Italians either.

I don't see in the posts that it refers to Corralejo, and as far as i am aware from many freinds who own bars in town there is no problem here, with Italians or anyone else if it comes to that,

Try telling that to the graffiti artists not me.

I think it's you thats got a problem with Corralejo. Putting up a rabid defense when no one is actually attacking it. The island gets to you like that after a while... siege mentality.

Do find that in the main the Italian restaurants/bars tend to be more expensive than other nationalities.  And the rentals are much more expensive now - which does seem to reflect over the last couple of years the increase in the number of Italians coming to the island.

At the last census Italians were the most numerous after Spanish in La Oliva. Brits were a distant third, only 60% as many as Italians

They're taking over in Caleta too. When I was in Mexico, the place was over-run with them,  and in Cuba one small resort I wanted to go to was Italian run.

They've got out of Italy while the going was good.

The going in Italy is very bad Woe not good. I suppose the locals are upset that they are taking over Corralejo in a big way. I know a lot of the locals blame them for the crime wave.

I've heard several Spanish people say that.

There's definitely an imbalance setting in now. I hear it was that way some time back, but then they were Brits and Irish in the majority. I hope we get the status quo back. I have nothing against individual Italians, but it will be a shame if their culture and language takes dominance.

What should it matter what nationality is dominant. If they are boosting the islands economy who cares where they come from.
Ask questions like this in the UK and you'd be branded a racist.

That's where you misunderstand the true hopes of Brexiteers.  We are quite happy to welcome immigrants who are an asset to the UK. But hope it wil put a block on the many who are a drain on public services. It seems an easy concept to grasp to me..but it appears many can't or deliberately won't get it.If  the UK government had rules in place like Spain to prevent abuse of the nations services or benefits system we would not have needed Brexit.  But they don't...so we do.

2016: La Oliva: Spanish 13200; Italian 3400; UK 1600; Americas 2200; Africa 1000; German 800.

So, there are still plenty of Spaniards living in La Oliva.

The reason Italians aren't liked is that they are masters at getting what they want. Both Italy and Spain are corrupt countries with dishonest populations. So, the Italians are well capable of standing up for themselves, unlike the Brits and Irish, for instance. The Spanish prefer the guiris to be under their shoe. That's not going to happen with the Italians!!

People also need to understand the way the Italians operate.
They have to pay a fee to the Italian government to have their healthcare exported to Spain.
Hence, they come here and set up businesses instead, involving the whole family (including grandparents, etc.), which enables them to get free healthcare here in Spain.

With regards crime: again the spanish like to point the finger at foreigners committing the most crime. IT's more a case of being easier to catch and convict foreigners, as they are less likely to have the best lawyers and also less likely to have a collection of fake witnesses on standby for any eventuality.

So why hasn't there been a massive outcry about the way the British government are failing to protect their citizens and their infrastructure properly? Why make a scapegoat out of the EU when the real culprit is at home? All the UK had to do was reform its social services, for heaven's sake! Bring in an ID card for citizens, and a resident's card for fully legal foreign residents, and require that those cards be shown before receiving healthcare or social benefits. And require all foreign residents to pay in before taking out. Non-contributors would then have to have private means or leave. Easy - problem solved! That could have been done within the EU too!

I can already see things edging round to (1) paying for access to the single market and (2) allowing freedom of movement with EU member states. Just like Norway, the UK will end up paying for all the benefits, without having any say at all in the procedures.

One of the best posting on this subject i have seen, and so true, have you thought about a career change SheilaW, i wholeheartedly agree the UK will end up exactly the same as Norway, but with huge payments for the privilege, and still open borders, hope we are wrong but time will tell and at the end of the day we do have to honor the outcome of the vote by the majority of the UK.

I agree successive governments both Tory and Labour could have solved the problem with a clampdown on NHS and benefits abuse, but the fact is they haven't... and never will. Its a vote loser to start with and the one's who will bleat about it most are the one's complaining the most about the triggering of brexit.  If the British political establishment will do nothing to solve it domestically and the electorate know they won't...then the only way is to cut the problem is at source. We won't even start about the EU's economic incompetence and Brussels misappropriation of EU funding. There's just too much ground to cover, but its something that is conveniently glossed over when immigration is the talk of the town.

Interesting posting Sheila, for the pure at heart, I think you are absolutely right. Put in the google search engine "Fake British Passports", "Fake British Driving Licence", "Manchester Fake Designer Goods and Shops", just for starters. The UK government want to really start thinking about integration rather than immigration, which is a totally lost cause, visit any major city in the UK, its obvious.

When people talk about Spanish and Italians being corrupt think about this, the NHS have a large contingent of middle to upper management not to mention doctors and consultants who originate from some of the most corrupt countries on the planet, multiply that across all UK government departments and you wonder why we are in so much dept.

Interesting discussion on how the UK could and should have put restrictions in place to stop the many and frequent abuses of services compared to many EU countries. Well it all hinged around ID cards. Most people in Europe routinely carry them, do not have a problem with them, and that makes checks and balances quite easy. Blair did see the need for this, and tried, many years ago to bring them in. He got howled down, half his own Government were against the idea and the Liberal minded simply foamed at the mouth. The idea was abandoned and for obvious reasons never tried again. If he had succeeded well.......who knows  ::)....It was one idea I was in favour of by the way

One thing that all Governments from Major through to Cameron were guilty of, was simply enforcing every damn stupid rule and regulation that came out of Brussels. Not just enforced but with ruthless efficency. Countries like Spain and France accepted the same rules, looked at them, if thought unpopular they were not enforced. Brussels knew this was happening but as long as the game was played they were happy with that.

The trouble with Major/Blair/Brown and Cameron was they failed to realise there was even a game to be played. It is therefore little wonder that when the opportunity came for an overdue game of `Ar£ekicking` the majority of the British public seized it with glee. You can`t blame Joe Public no matter how much some of you would like to.....

The truth of it is that the Lib Dems, greens, large sections of Labour and even a smattering of over privileged Tories do not want the situation reversed. They don't want it reversed by immigration control and they don't want it reversed by meddling with so called 'human rights' either. This political Liberal elite who have probably forgotten, or have never known what it is to queue in an NHS hospital are the real reason the referendum vote went the way it did. As Paully rightly says the British public were cornered, and given the chance took the life line with both hands, giving Cameron and the rest of his political cronies the smack in the face they so richly deserved.

If some of these remain jokers had an ounce of sense they would pack in the whinging and try making leaving the EU work to the advantage of the British people. If they could only put in as much effort looking after our interests as they do looking after their own we should come out on top.

New British passports look like being implemented in the old navy blue sytle. Can't come soon enough for me. It will be nice to have our old identity back, instead of being just another burgundy one in the vast sea of EU members. Not something the remainer's will be overjoyed about, but then who cares? ;D

Malabu for someone who doesn't seem to care for the subject matter you tend to voice your opinion and involve yourself quite freely in the discussion when it suits you.

Rather than reading and complaining, how about you just leave the thread be and devote yourself to the numerous other topics that would suit you better.

What difference does the colour of your passport make? It says British whether it's blue, red or sky blue pink with purple dots on.
That's £500 million that could be far better spent.

From what i have heard  a new format for passports is on the agenda post Brexit regardless. Changing the colour during the process of removing EU logos will cost nothing extra.
