Title: Nordic Walking
Post by: GSD Girl on October 23, 2016, 10:46:55 AM
The old joints are getting too worn out for jogging now so thought I would give Nordic Walking a go when we come over in December. Has anyone been on a  Big Blue Nordic Walking Course and does anyone know of any others preferably in the north?

We recently started Noridc walking in the UK and have to say it is fantastic way of keeping fit, so much more so than normal walking. Key is to get yourself a decent set of poles, sorry don't know of any suppliers on the island.
In the UK there are organisations which insist you attend a beginners course before joining their group but to be honest I don't think this is needed. Just search in YouTube and you will find many videos of how it's done. It is important though to have the correct poles.

Those pacer poles, as they're called, are not cheap.

Thanks Decho will have a look at utube. Have heard so many positive comments about Nordic Walking really want to give it a go. Hoped that if we found a professional instructor they might hire out the pacer poles (thanks for the tech term Woe10) while we are over. We are coming for three weeks over Christmas/New Year so baggage allowance is already taken so can't bring any with us.
If anyone does hear of anywhere we can hire from please let me know. Otherwise I suppose we could get a couple of bamboo canes each from the garden centre   :)

Not over until mid December and don't know anyone who lives on the island :( Never mind. We will ask around when over, we are staying in El Cotillo, we might find some. Thanks anyway.

The thing about Nordic Walking POles is that they are slightly longer than normal walking poles and they also have special straps which allow you to push through the step as you pace in the same way that Nordic Skiers do. Thye also have special rubber feet which are angled to grip the surface as you do this.
The whole action is what makes it better than normal walking...it does feel strange at first but you soon get use to it.
We paid about £50 for a reasonably good pair of poles from Tisos....I think it's worth getting ones that are height adjustable so that you can tailor them to your own needs.

Any decent sports shop will have them. No need to pay anymore than 20e for 2.

No training necessary. Internet has all the advise required.

Be prepared for ignorant majoreros to make fun of you, saying that ski poles are not required as they don't get any snow!!

Thanks Calculator. Will have a look in P R. As for majoreros, i'm pretty thick skinned. Anyway,
I can always give them a poke with me stick!  :o
