Title: Convert $ to Euros?
Post by: Julian30 on August 02, 2016, 16:24:50 PM
Hi,

Long time lurker (love the jokes section!) first time poster.

We're coming across for our third trip in September (the place really grows on you) and normally I buy Euros here in the UK but this time I have some US $ left from a recent trip that I want to convert to Euros over on Fuerte rather than change to UK £ and then to Euros.

My question is, does anyone know of an exchange in Corralejo that I can change US$ to Euros at a 'reasonable' rate?

Many thanks.

ps...hope I don't have to answer all those questions every time I post ;-)

Firstly welcome to the forum, and you will have to answer all those questions the first 56 times, but then you will be fine.

There are exchanges in Coralejo, and my understanding is the euro is strong against the dollar at the monent, but whether you will get a fair rate or even what the rate is is impossible to say in advance

:o hope you're joking about the 56 (although I see I have to do it to post this!)

Thanks for the response, I genuinely hadn't noticed (as I wasn't looking) for money exchanges so good to know they are available.

Is the US$ in cash or Travellers Cheques?

If it's TCs you might be lucky as I once was in Spain.  The cashier heard my accent, assumed (correectly) that I was English and also assumed (incorrectly) that I had Sterling Travellers Cheques.

It was only after I'd walked away, I realised his mistake!!!

Why not exchange direct to â,¬ in the UK before you leave.  The banking system isn't too primitive - should be able to handle that!  You'll be able to shop around for a better rate, too.

The same person who steals beach towels at hotels.

Are you proud of yourself?
And is your mom?

Sir Real - Not thinking of converting here in UK because I understand the way it works would be $ to £ and then £ to Euros which means I'd get 'done' on the selling $ to £, I'd rather convert $ to Euros straight if possible.

JohnRgb2 - Phew, 56 would have been extreme!

Hev, this was a long time ago!!! At the time, I worked for Thomas Cook Travellers Cheques and when we were working in the USA, we were paid expeses in US$ TCs.  I had saved some of them and they went towords a holiday.

And for Erik : the towel thing was merely a suggestion, not from experience.  And my mother has been dead for some years now

I think you are correct in your assumption. You'd have to sell the dollars for Sterling and then buy Euros with the Sterling, getting the "sticky" end of the stick on both transactions. You'd lose about 10% of the value.

It might not be easy finding somewhere in Fuerte to exchange (I'd suggest a bank rather than a Bureau de Change) but you should be able to do it at an overall better rate than in the UK.

Then I have to retract my comment that "the banking system isn't too primitive..."!  Maybe it's just another method the banks have devised to get money from us?

Thanks HairyBiker that's what I'd assumed and with the exchange rates being what they are I'd like to squeeze maximum out of it :-)

Julian,

See the "King" in Corralejo for a straight cash transaction from dollars to euros. He has a liquor/tobacco shop towards the Galera beach end of the road, in between Penny Lane and Murphy's bars, off the main street that is cornered by De Napoli restaurant. Right now $1 is worth around 88 cents at the bank rate. I'd be surprised if he offered you anything less than 85 cents, much better than you'll receive in the UK. He usually offers around two/three cents less than the bank rate when exchanging pounds, be prepared to haggle for the best price! You certainly don't want to be changing the money twice, to pounds then euros.

I want to know the same thing.  In the next day or so i will ask the question in sol bank and let you know and the exchange rate for such/fees.

As there was a queue I only asked if bank sabadell (sol bank) would change.  Answer was yes if you banked with them and took in your passport.
