Title: Ryanair to make parents pay for reserved seats
Post by: paully on July 28, 2016, 21:51:36 PM
Whilst strictly speaking this should be in the flight information, I thought it would be more to the point on chat...anyway here is the full story so far:  http://news.sky.com/story/ryanair-to-make-parents-pay-for-reserved-seats-10515647

For once I find myself in agreement with them. Its called leadership and taking charge of what is becoming a fraught and all too regular scenario. Quite properly, there is no charge being levied for the kids seats, only the adults. That will spike the cheapskates who try to save a couple of bob and then  don`t give a monkey`s who they inconvenience, while the poor crew have to move folk about to sort out Chantelle and Tyrone, and still try to maintain the slot time. Well done O`Leary  ;D

Yes and about time too. I have experienced this at first hand, and I refused flat out to move. I saw that the father chose not to take a seat on boarding and stood blocking the isle as his wife tried to seat the children, it wasn`t possible to find a row of free seats to accommodate them all. The flight attendants then asked for volunteers to move, no one volunteered. Then father kicked off , quoting the rules about not seating children next to adults they didn`t know. Finally some of the passengers moved and it got sorted but I just thought it was an appalling thing to do just to save a few quid.

I totally agree with the above comments and it's about time. I too have been asked to move and flatly refused. I paid for the seats for us to sit together unlike the tightwads.   ;)

Good move, I've been on at least three flights were this type of situation has caused problems

I think they should go the whole way and ban kids from flights. How good would that be no kids on a Ryanair flight. They should go on a train to Blackpool for there hols like we did.

Nice idea, it will never happen of course as the great unwashed are Ryan Airs main customers.

I am totally with Ryanair on this one.  I get fed up with being asked to move in order to accommodate those who are too mean to pay a few extra quid for a seat.  This extra can't be much compared to the total cost of a holiday.

It seems the posters who replied in this thread are 'the great unwashed' who fly RA...as am I..as the flight times are good from Stansted and the prices are good too.. I take it you charter a flight or get Virgin maybe to divert and drop you off at Fue ... what a snobby reply. It means I can afford to fly to Fue 5 or 6 times a year to see my grandson...flying with the other 'great unwashed' with RA.

Wholeheartedly agree Hev, we always travel with RA, not much other choice really so us too fall within the category of the great unwashed, it was worded without much thought to the thousands of other decent folk who choose RA mainly as you say it enables us to fly more frequently, and not everybody who travels with children have an unlimited supply of cash to spend on other airlines so too choose RA as their transport.
Yes totally agree with RA on their new policy we have also witnessed the same scenario of families waiting to be seated together whilst the crew try to persuade fellow passengers to give up their prepaid seats, we also will not move on principle ie if we had wanted to be allocated a seat anywhere we could have chosen to not pay.
A classic example was last year a lady was adamant that she had to have her son and daughter sat with her because they needed constant medication during the 4 hour flight, after a lot of pleading a couple who had paid for front seats agreed to move mainly as they felt sorry for the kids, not once did the mother administer any medication to either of them in fact they all sat troughing on crisps, snacks, fizzy drinks etc, rant over  ;D ;D

I did say MAIN customers, not all of their customers, I have traveled with Ryan Air once, but would not do again neither would I use Easy jet although in the past I did often, the remark was not meant to insult anyone just a generalization.

It's not the  kids it's the families. I had a family behind me. About ten minutes into the flight I feel the seat being kicked. I assumed it was the child. Nope it was the father. The child was perfect.

On a different flight I had a window seat. Next to me was a large American. Every time something mildly interesting was outside the window he would lean over and drape himself over me. The first time it was surprising. The rest of the flight it was  :o

I think you are cutting off your nose to spite your face here John, FR is held in great esteem by many forumites on here, people who have recognised for themselves what an excellent airline it is and are not influenced by those that seem to think it is fashionable to be snobby about FR. My airline of choice for getting abroad anyway. You may have had a bad experience with them, just as you can with any airline. Give them another go.

Happened on Friday to return flight to Birmingham, we paid for 4 seats with our grandkids, so very little sympathy for people who expect others to move for them. It's your children and you need to be proactive in ensuring their well being.

I sometimes wonder if some passengers are a bit behind the times? Maybe they think that the old stampede rules are still valid, force your way to the front and sit where you like, it hasn`t been like that for a while, the stampede can only begin once the passengers who have paid   to sit in a specific seat are boarded . The boarding queue is segregated to facilitate it. More`s the pity, I used to enjoy it !

I wonder if you're maybe behind the times too?  For some time now, Ryanair have allocated seat numbers to every passenger, to help prevent the stampede.  If you wish to pay extra, you can choose your own seat when booking, but if you don't pay, a seat number will be allocated to you on check-in.

Yes, I know that thank you, back in the day it wasn`t the case and it was first come first served. I think FR decided there was money to be made by charging for seat selection. There is also a bit of a problem with overhead locker space, if you sit in the departure lounge until the stampede is over then your seat will be available but the overhead locker will be crammed full of clothing, bags, duty free stuff etc. Your stuff will be taken off you and stowed down the other end of the plane.

We just travel with soft bags which go under the seat in front.  No problems being last on.

Some people who travel on budget airlines expect to get 5 star treatment even if they have not paid for extras such as reserved seats.  They need to understand the term BUDGET airline.

Cabin Max luggage bag dimensions universally agreed by all major airlines. It`s the coats, dutyfree, jumpers, carrier bags and all the rest of the detritus carried on by the terminally selfish.

Perhaps Iv`e been lucky but Iv`e never encountered any problem drunks when Iv`e been flying to Fuerte. The worst one I saw was , of all things , an elderly lady who drank miniature brandy`s, two at a time. Then she was sick down her blouse and sick again on the floor while queueing for the toilet.

Have encountered the child not sitting next to parent.   Last year the crew were trying to get folk to move so they could take off, as they would not if child was not sitting with a parent.   Turns out the lady had only booked flights couple of days before and was issued with seats but they were not together.  So in that case was RA problem.
Only drunk had next to me recently was again couple years ago.   He was sat next to me and smelt as if he was the whole of the great unwashed wrapped into one.  He then proceeded to pull cans of beer from his bag below his seat and slugged out of them.   Where would he have got these, surely not in the airport  he must had about ten.   He would then take some to his other half down the plane.

I don`t want reserved seats if I have to pay for them, don`t care where I sit, although some seats are not as good as others, still though, never had a seat so bad I felt the urge to stand up. unlike the selfish sods who insist on standing in the isle for the whole flight, getting in everyone`s way and sticking their stinking butts into other people`s space. Damned nuisance they are.

There must be a market for Adults only flights and most would be happy to pay a little more for the comfort zone, and maybe  its about time RA started charging passengers by their weight weight and how many seats they require to fit into!

That should get some of you reeling in the isle!

What about the "disabled" people in wheelchairs who scoot to the front of the check-in queue, then get priority treatment to get on the plane, and then appear happy to wander up and down the aisle to the loo?

Oh yeah, they should fit commodes or make them wear adult nappies (let's hope one doesn't have to sit next to you in his / her soiled nappy. )
Are you serious in that you object to someone disabled using the toilet ? ? ? They should just sit there and wet themselves..or mess themselves ? ?  ??? :o

No Hev, you`ve missed Bedouin`s point. I`ve seen it and so have you, the `disabled` in the wheelchair, priority everything for free, then once airbourne lo and behold a miraculous cure. They have no probs with mobility, walk up and down the aisle with ease..There were two on my last flight but one walked off without waiting for any assistance and without any obvious problems.. >:(

Don't tar all disabled and wheelchair users with the same dirty brush.   But yes there are some abuse the system.  A friend was a wheelchair pusher at Edinburgh airport and told of quite few similar abuses.
As to adult only flights doubtful. Mind there are some so called adults who are worse than kids.  Like my stinking, stinking neighbour.   But we could have sections of plane which are adults only.  As well as solving the kicking the backs of seats etc would also lessen problem of kids sitting with parents and amazing how kids quieten down in company of other kids.   When smoking was allowed on planes there was the smoking section, so easy to do and computer systems will automatically seat families in the families section.
Come on RA be a leader on this.

My sister and her husband love kids but when they go on holiday they will only stay at adult only places - they've been doing this for some years and say it has become very popular.
I'd certainly support an adults only flight or at least an adults only section. Now that my days of taking my own children on holiday are over I find I have far less patience with other people's misbehaved ones, perhaps it's just my age!

I take my grand kids on our Spring sortie to Fuerteventura et al, and they love it.  But they are also well behaved and sit quieter than some adults on the plane!!
I think its sad that some want childless flights/hotels as the kids in this day and age, with all the pressures that life brings nowadays onto them, deserve a break too.
Looking at my two lying on the sun lounger next to the pool or beach chilling out saying: this is brilliant etc, tells me they are doing just that - relaxing.

So in my opinion its not the kids that need sorting, its more like their parents or guardians taking them on holiday that need to control them better.
Having said that there are lots of places, beaches etc  that offer peace and quiet once there  ;)

We love child-friendly hotels, restaurants etc.

The joy of watching our children, and now our grandchildren, enjoying themselves and interacting with others is hard to beat.
Our own girls were born into the time before all-day drinking and indoor family facilities (really not that long ago you'd be relegated to the garden, or a lean-to at best). They were not even of school age when the drinking laws changed and families became welcomed into pubs and other places.
Now, family outings can be so much better, more natural, fun.

We love adult only hotels, restaurants etc

Relaxing, quieter - or noisier according to your preference - proper grown-up time.

It's all a matter of whether you have your own, lovingly cared for, well behaved, kids with you or you're surrounded by other people's marauding little horrors.

We can do both, according to the occasion  :)

Air travel It's time we all started to realise that it's Public Transport by a different name. Just like getting a train or - horrors - a bus!
It's all over after an hour or so (three and a half  for Fuerte). It's a long time to hold one's breath, though!!!

Just booked return flights from Fue to Stansted for my Grandson & his Mum to come over here next month on RA.. it didnt actually say we had to book seats but I did and it was only £6 a seat. There were 3 different seating levels from premium through to standard (rows 18 - 30 were cheapest for some reason I can't remember)

We will never take a bus, always a taxi and sometimes a limo.
If we travel by train we have the choice to buy a first class ticket.
Flying to most destinations we allways pay the extra for bussinessclass.
Unfortunately they don't offer  bussinessclass on flights to the Canarias.
Must be because the vast majority of visitors are price oriented

It's all over after an hour or so (three and a half  for Fuerte). It's a long time to hold one's breath, though!!!

Quick check shows BA Business Class £637.12 ex LGW 12 Oct, return 19 Oct, so you can do it.
Book through www.business2first.com

There are also plenty of air-taxi firms and executive jet operators who would be glad to take your money for a special flight.

Or just put up with slumming it with the rest of us proles.

BA business class on long haul routes is OK.  However, for a flight to Fuerte on say a 737.what you will get is a seat near the the front, with two people sharing a row of three seats. OK, you will get free drink, better food & be fawned over a bit, but is it worth it?
Probably the best perquisite, is access to the business lounge so you do not have to rub shoulders with the proles while you wait for your flight.

There is no BA from Fuerteventura to the south of Holland.
Normally we have all the time to select a flight on a perferred airline which provide better confort and service (eg Tuifly, Airberlin).
Other criteria are the departure and arrival time and the airport (we avoid major airports)

Sometimes however we don't have the luxury of time:
2 months ago we had to get back asap so the next day we had an early Binter to Las Palmas,
an Iberia to Madrid and a RyanAir to Weeze. And we were glad we got there on time!

I have very fond memories of the old 'stampede' when my husband and children blundered on and left me on my own, with my book, for 4 happy hours...
