I recently heard of gold dust being found in the hills near Caleta.Has anyone else heard this?
probably blew across from africa in a calima !
Geologically speaking, I think it's very unlikely there could be natural deposits of gold in a land produced by recent volcanic activity.
This will be the new rumour put out by the estate agents ::)
Possible, according to this site: http://volcano.oregonstate.edu/book/export/html/170
The rocks here are certainly over 2 million years old and there's lots of basalt around. But I don't think anyone will be getting rich.
Interesting link Sheila, thanks
next thing we know is the hofmans from the discovery channel winding up in alaska and invading the canaries. :o :D :
Strictly speaking there probably is gold, but it will only be present as a trace element in the rocks, i.e. in such small amounts (ppm = parts per million or ppb=parts per billion) which are only detectable by using highly advanced technology (eg. ICP-MS = inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy).
You really need a subduction zone, not intraplate ocean islands like the Canaries, Cape Verdes, Hawaii etc., to get some gold mineralisation. There (subduction setting) you get porphyry and/or epithermal gold deposits often associated with copper.
In the right geological setting a few hundreds of thousands of years (or less) are probably enough to produce some gold mineralisation.
Bloody hell it's a bit technical in this thread, someone give Jand a shout please, could do with a few volcano charts and graphs to really liven things up!
or perhaps we could have some of the above in English please :-*
They have Jam Butty Mines in Knotty Ash 8)

Probably the latest Sales gimmick to sell off the remaining properties on Chipmunk. Forget renting out to cover the mortgage, just dig around in your own garden!
Perhaps these 2 web sites (not spam!) are useful?

Side note: I think gold mining is fascinating. I have watched lots of Todd Hoffman and his crew, but I got bored by the artificiality of the show. Without sponsoring from the Discovery channel and Volvo he wouldn't be mining. The real bit of the show is that they are mining placer gold, ie gold that has been eroded out of the mountains and deposited by rivers and other erosional processes. You need a great placer gold deposit to be able to afford all that super expensive machinery they've got on the show. They simply never find that amount of gold. Discovery and Volvo kept them going - for show!
Was gold found in the mines at Ajuy? One of the bars there has (maybe used to have as I have not visited there for a while) the word gold (oro) in its name.

Probably taken from a passing Spanish Galleon that sank.
Here's an interesting article about Fuerteventura Pirates in the 1500's

The bar in Ajuy is The Goldfish. LOL
