The good relations between the Canaries and Madrid could be on the rocks
Relations between the Canaries and Madrid since the new regional government took up office in June look likely to be soured by the outcome of the legal proceedings brought by the Spanish authorities against their Canarian counterparts over the latter`s controversial ban on the building of all but 5-star new hotels.
The rules were a series of measures enacted by the Canaries in the new Tourism Law designed to improve the quality of holiday accommodation in the islands and triggered a furious protest by Madrid on the grounds that it was a restriction on free enterprise and was totally unjustified.
After a bitter dispute that went to the Constitutional Court, Madrid has now emerged victorious following the land`s highest judges ruling that the Canaries had no power to impose the ban.
In a hard-hitting judgement, the court said that the argument used by the Canarian government - that the ban on all but 5-star hotels was designed to help the environment by limiting the number of new establishments, was incoherent given that any new hotel would have an environmental impact.
Considering the fact not everyone wants 5 star accommodation or even a hotel come to that, it sounds a pretty fair judgement to me.
It amazes me how so called intelligent people can think along these lines

Yes an excellent outcome in my eyes when away we certainly dont want 5 star places just not for us( thats not saying they might not want us)
