Title: Man drowned off Corralejo Grandes Playas by the RIUs today
Post by: TamaraEnLaPlaya on August 11, 2015, 01:53:49 AM
Sad news, happened just after we left the beach, so about 6pm. Friends who were still on beach witnessed the successful rescue of 3 people from the water but sadly by the time the lifeguards located the 4th person in the group it was too late. Seems ironic that the warning flags were yellow today rather than the red ones that have been in place for the last week or so.
There have been a number of Rips on that beach this last week - please take great care if you are in the water, the Rips have been sweeping people off their feet when they are at less than knee depth of water.

Here we go again. Every year  >:(  When will the councils erect these signs

They've just erected dozens of signs along the back of the airport saying "no kite boarding", "no dogs", "no camping".. Why not these.

This is really sad & as Woe points out, more could be done to educate people. The tour operators could do more on the bus transfers instead of trying to sell stuff.

It's not the rip current that drowns you, it's fear & panic. Being pulled out to sea really is a bum nipper, I once got caught, be it for a short period of time. People need to know that a rip will not send them half way to Africa & if they concentrate on keeping afloat, there is every chance they will end up back on the beach

Another near fatality?

The translation leaves a bit to be desired but I'm sure this is a different incident to the one that I originally posted about. However, strangely, the former incident doesn't appear to have been reported.

Update from Island Connections - maybe this might prompt some warning signs, people just don't understand what/why when the soccoristas are blowing their whistles and gesturing.

We're doing our best to bring this problem to the attention af the Cabildos concerned, but they don't seem to be listening. Not one of those elected in recent elections has commented. Disgusting.
