I agree, they do use a lot of these phrases all the time.......sounds like they are talking in riddles!! LOL!
One I use a lot is "me saca de quicio" - especially when facing a testing situation at the Town Hall for example! And it is not vulgar.

Sometimes we in all innocent don't help. I sent what I thought was Spanish for Happy new Year Feliz Año Nuevo is what it was meant to be but forgot the tilde and wrote Feliz Ano Nuevo my friend fell about the place laughing I believe, and she hasn't let me forget it.
