Title: NIE renewal
Post by: stevenizzy on April 06, 2015, 14:46:11 PM
Hi everyone,

Our NIE's have expired and we would like to renew them.
They were originally done in Puerto Del Rosario but can we
get them renewed anywhere i.e. Corralejo

Is it the local police or Guardia we need to go to.

Thanks for any help once again.

Izzy.

My understanding is that  since 2012, the Certificate of your NIE does expire after 3 months and has to be renewed - however the number stays with you for life! If you got your NIE before 2012 , then your number AND certificate has no expiry - although my bit of paper is nearly in shreds!  Sorry I don't know where you go for renewal but would assume the National Police station in Puerto del Rosario.

Thanks for your help. I thought that if you wanted to buy something significant like property your NIE would have to be valid. We have had it since November and shown it several times in its expired state but just wondered if it was worth getting renewed?
Cheers,
Izzy.

Only renew the cert if you need it for something specific, house purchase etc, otherwise don't waste your time and money. If you need it renewed go to central police in Puerto go early and it can be done in 10mins.

If you have a bank account then it has to be renewed. It's the bank that gets the aggro so most will be happy to handle it for you (at your expense, of course).

I have a bank a/c and don't renew. Never been asked to do so. Why do you say this?

I thought the same but when I needed to show the certificate at INSS I was asked to obtain a new one as they needed to see a certificate dated within the last 3 months. (Original dated 2005). NIE number remained the same of course. New copy obtained from Police National in Puerto - for a small fee payable at a bank, as usual!

Because it's what I believe to be the truth, of course :). As I said, the bank will often do it on your behalf. They don't necessarily break down their charges to show what they cover. Maybe your bank systematically applies this procedure for all account holders registered as non-resident. They need to keep the certificate in their files; they aren't bothered about whether you get a copy.

What did you renew ? Or in simple terms, was the document green or white?

Hi all

Anyone know where the national police station is in Puerto? How do I pay for it? At a bank and if so with which form?

Thanks,
Izzy.

Hi Izzy! From where you are, take the ring road around PDR until the turn for La Oliva etc. Turn left here, in towards PDR centre. A km or so down on your right is a large supermarket, and you can park in the car park here. Continue on foot down the main road for another fifty metres or so, and the main police station is on the corner facing you as you walk down. Go into the entrance to the right of the vehicle access as you look at it.

cant help with the other info, I'm afraid, we opted for residencia after our NIE expired.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the help - it is really appreciated.
Finally sorted the social security number-they wanted a stamped
and signed letter from my employer!
It took 5 minutes to obtain in the end!

Salut!

I needed an up to date NIE document (white A4) on this occasion.

Yes, the white NIE certificate must always be within 3 months irrespective of whether there is an expiry date or not. It's generally only issued as a provisional document.

As a side note, SS come across quite a few foreigners who think that the white NIE document is all they require for residence purposes. It is only a  temporary document with validity of 3 months. For most transactions they will require the green certificate (doesn't expire), obtainable at the police station.
