Title: Stopcock
Post by: MLA on February 16, 2015, 08:40:30 AM
We arrived back at our apartment last Thursday, to find that when we opened the water stopcock in the bathroom we had no running water. On further investigation, which involved the community ladder and getting on our roof where there are six water tanks, mine and the neighbours, I found that the water feed to our tank, and down to our apartment had been turned off. I turned them both on, but still only got a trickle out of the taps. I then went to the pump room where all the complexes apartments water supply are metered. There I found that someone had turned our apartments feed off, at both sides of the water meter. Turning it on, I saw that the meter was spinning although everything was off in the apartment. I went back onto the roof and found that the ballcock had stuck and as a result was constantly filling the tank!

What must have happened, is that someone had noticed my water tank overflowing and turned all my water feeds off for me.

I had always thought that turning the water off at the stopcock in the apartment was sufficient when returning to the U.K. lesson learnt! I now will always turn my water off at the meter. And a BIG THANKS to the person who turned my water off.

Good lesson to learn. The prob with those roof tanks is that if they overflow, you generally don't know, because they don't all have visible overflows like in the UK. Worth making a regular check, especially if your water bill is a bit high!

I agree Archer, it will be interesting to see what my water bill is this 1/4.
